Mazda RX-7 (Second Gen; FC3S): Is it really 50:50 in weight distribution? #Mythbusted

Now believe it or not, there’s a common belief amongst Mazda rotary fans that the second generation RX-7 is 50:50 in weight distribution, just like the third generation FD3S RX-7. With the car naturally being so well balanced, on top of the lack of proper online documentation on its official weight distribution, it’s understandable to see why this can be so easily believable. Now the question is: Is it true?

Well, MotorTrend helps a ton here with their coverage of the naturally-aspirated 1986 Mazda RX-7. Upon going over the specifications chart, you’ll see that…

…it definitely is not 50:50 in weight. With the naturally-aspirated version coming in at 51:49, it’s even more unlikely that the turbocharged models will be any closer to 50:50, likely being 52:48 than anything else. The third generation RX-7 was 50:50 due to a lot of re-design and chassis work inspired by a jet fighter plane and the 50:50 weight distribution craze that arose in the 1990’s. With that out of the way, I hope this quick post helps you rotary fans to properly inform the mislead bunch about the inaccuracy of this myth.

SAs and FBs are the same (FB isn’t even an official Mazda chassis code). There were three generations of RX-7.
