Mazda Is Still Making Noises About Building A Rotary Sports Car

Dare we believe that a new rotary sports car is on the way from Mazda? That’s the question we’ve been asking ourselves ever since Mazda revealed its RX Vision concept, and with the rumours arriving in dribs and drabs, we’ve been keeping our fingers firmly crossed.

The latest little nugget of hope comes from Russell Wager, vice president of marketing for Mazda North American Operations. According by Wards Auto, Wagner touched upon the subject of the RX concept during a Q&A session at an auto conference in the US. “That concept car shows RX in the title. Every time we’ve used that in the past, it means rotary engine. I hope that’s the case this time,” he said.

He went on to say: “That car wouldn’t come to market unless it has a rotary engine…That’s what they are working on.”

Granted, it’s all still pretty vague at this point, but Mazda is still talking about future rotary products in public, and - crucially - hasn’t ruled anything out. Make sure those fingers remain crossed, folks…

It would have to be turbo charged and emissions friendly to ever happen these days. Even a hybrid rotary!

I’d be okay with that, if this means rotary

from the looks of it they don’t want to make it hybrid, instead they’re settling for less power compared to rivals like the new NSX and Toyota FT1, hybrid power with a rotary engine probably won’t work well anyway, will probably just ruin the smooth powerband of the rotary engine.
