MY PERFECT NEED FOR SPEED GAME (2019 WISHLIST AND SUGGESTIONS FOR GHOST GAMES) #blogpost
DISCLAIMER: this post was previously published on my Drivetribe account
The Need For Speed franchise needs no introduction. It has been blessing our gaming systems since 1994, everyone knows about the games and has played any of them at least once in their lives. The franchise has some near perfect gems and some stinkers as well.
Personally, the Need For Speed games were always close to my heart. From my early childhood days with NFS II, through school years with Hot Pursuit 2, both Underground games and Most Wanted 2005, to today with Hot Pursuit 2010, The Run, Most Wanted 2012, NFS 2015 and Payback. As much as I love the games (and the movie), there’s no denying that Payback has disappointed many fans, because of its nonsensical design choices. And since the 25th anniversary of NFS is coming up, it’s time to make this milestone count. These are my suggestions not for only NFS 2019, but on my perfect Need For Speed game. Here we go.
Let’s start with customization. I’d love to see the mix-and-match feature from Payback in the next games (example: front bumper from Rocket Bunny and fenders from Ghost). Let us not only mix and match, but also remove certain parts like hoods, spoilers, mirrors, roofs on convertibles, etc. Keep the ability to change front and rear wheels separately, but add the option to fit one set of tires to both front and rear as well. Also, make as minimal restrictions as possible. All forms of neons, air suspension, nitrous colour and tire smoke can also return, but make them normally purchasable with in game cash and not hidden behind shipments or microtransactions. As for stance, let us lower the car as low as possible, camber the wheels and make track width return. While we are on the topic of returning, what happened to the part names and descriptions? It was a nice detail in NFS 2015, make that return too.
In terms of parts, make all parts from 2015 and Payback return and add some new ones like BBS and Volk (Rays) rims, blowers for muscle cars, more factory parts (like the Weissach Package for Porsches, Nismo for Nissans, or STI parts for BRZ) and more fictional Ghost or NFS branded parts. Make sure that all cars have pretty much equal amount of parts to avoid people complaining. I’d also like to see the ability of changing the parts material (normal or carbon hood, colour of the lights, bigger rim sizes). The ability to change camera while customizing should be kept. Neons should be both classically under the car, but also in the engine and trunk as an available option.
If Ghost Games implement cockpit view (which I suggest they should), they can also add interior customization - seats, steering wheels and gauges (from real manufacturers, with the ability to change colour and material of them) and trunk customization (material of the inside, different speakers, amplifiers, screens and nitrous bottles like in UG2), so we can show them off in events and multiplayer, more on that later.
And lastly on the customization topic, make it unlock with REP/XP, not through activities. Let us truly customize and make cars our own.
All cars from Payback should return (even the off-road pickup trucks, MW2012 had them and that was a city focused game). But Ghost should add more, like:
more JDM cars (Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, Mazda RX-8, Nissan Skyline GT-R R33, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 370z, Nissan Silvia S14, Honda CRX, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, Evo X, Subaru Impreza 22b, STi Hawkeye, Blobeye, WRX STi, Nissan Skyline 2000GT-R, Infiniti G35)
if Toyota change their minds, then Supra MK3 and MK4, Celica GT-Four, Celica GT-S, Lexus LC500, IS300, RCF, LFA
classic muscle cars (Ford Mustang Fastback, Mustang Mach 1, Shelby Cobra, Shelby GT500, Dodge Challenger R/T, Chevrolet Corvette C2 Stingray, Corvette C3, 70’s Camaro)
modern muscle cars (Ford Mustang SVT Cobra, Dodge Viper SRT10, Chevrolet Corvette C5)
exotics/super/hypercars (Lamborghini Gallardo, previous gen Audi R8, Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, 4C, McLaren 720s, MP4-12C, Aston Martin V12 Vantage, Vanquish, Koenigsegg Agera, Bugatti Veyron, Chiron, Hennessey Venom GT, Bentley Continental, Mercedes Benz SLS, SLR McLaren)
if they allow customization on their cars, Ferrari (F12berlinetta, LaFerrari, California, Enzo, F40, F50, 458 Italia, 488, Superfast)
everyday cars (Ford Focus RS Mk1, RS500, Lancia Delta Integrale, Fiat Punto, Peugeot 206, 106, 107, the new 508, 207, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Alfa Brera, MiTo, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa B and C, Astra, Volkswagen Golf Mk2 and Mk4, Mini Cooper, modern Volvos)
SUV and trucks (previous gen Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Cadillac Escalade, Hummer H2, Chevrolet S10)
The story should be NOTHING like Payback. I would like the game to return to the urban car culture with illegal street racing and people having a good time. Basically UG1 and 2 + MW 2005 + Carbon + 2015 combined, including good characters with personality.
The cutscenes should be live action with real actors in the game world, I loved that in the forementioned games. Ideally I imagine the story with us as nobody, then meeting our crew and a female sidekick. There should also be a well-written antagonist with us having a motivation to defeat him and becoming the ultimate racer in the city. Surprise me, Ghost.
Like I mentioned before, the characters should be well written, well acted and should have a personality. However, they should not be annoying or cringey (cough Mac cough).
Main protagonist (us) - I think we should be mute, with the other characters adapting to us. Ghost should let us change our character as well with choices for sex, race, hair, eyes and clothing.
Female sidekick - I’d love if we had a female sidekick in the next game. She should be like Samantha/Rachel/Mia/Nikki - sexy, supportive, sassy, kind, helpful, but not slutty or annoying in any way.
Antagonist(s) - There should be an antagonist with a crew of his own. Again, they should have a personality, be threatening to us, do some bad things to us. They should all have a face (actor/actress), a voice and a car with unique vinyls and atributes. Ghost should make us determined to defeat the main boss, make a reason to go after him. They should also taunt us in cutscenes and races.
There should be crowds of people cheering us at the start/finish line and flag girls should make a comeback, along with guys starting races as well, #equality.
The map should be 70-80% city (or even multiple cities) with parks, downtown area, town square, suburban and industrial areas, gas stations which refill our NOS and repair our car, parking lots, garages, back alleys, multistorey car parks, an ACCESSIBLE airport, airfield, various landmarks, police stations (unlike Payback), a huge accessible mall, bus station and destroyable pursuit breakers. There should be big areas for us to mess around either on our own, or with other players, too. For reference, look at Olympic City, Bayview, Rockport, Palmont and Ventura Bay.
The city/cities should be connected with multiple highways (but don’t make them into a maze like in 2015) and tunnels for flooring and hearing that sweet sound of our ride. On the edge of the city/cities, there should be canyons with crashable guardrails where we can fall off the canyons.
Also, NO OFFROADING. The only offroading in NFS game should be in shortcuts and parks. Also also, NO INVISIBLE WALLS.
The whole map must feel alive with lot of things for us to do like activities, collectibles, roaming racers, cops and reasonable traffic (less in more isolated and narrow areas, more in more bustling, wide areas) and more pedestrians, either behind inaccessible pathways, building and areas, or fully roaming the city much like The Crew or Driver San Francisco, so they move out of the way.
Let’s move on to the cops. I’d like them to be like in MW2012 - roaming the city, chasing us after we either speed past them or ram into them, enjoyable and with heat levels. Do NOT make them like Rivals (too aggressive), 2015 (too braindead) or Payback (suicidal, unfair, stuck in scripted events). They should not have any pursuit tech like killswitches or EMPs, only roadblocks, spike strips and helicopters. If we do minimal collateral damage or speed past them, there should be an option to pay a small fine and moving on, just like in 2015. Also, the cops should spawn better, not in our field of view like in Payback, and the damage dealing should be consistent, again, not like in Payback. After evading them, let us hide in various hiding spots like back alleys, car washes, under bridges, etc.
I’d also like to hear the dispatch lady (Jane Perry) from HP2010, MW2012 and Rivals return, I think she was brilliant.
As for the heat levels:
1 - Ford Crown Victorias, not aggressive, with an option to pay a fine
2 - Ford Crown Victorias + roadblocks
3 - Dodge Chargers + roadblocks
4 - Dodge Chargers + roadblocks + spikestrips + SUVs
5 - Chevrolet Corvettes + roadblocks + spikestrips + SUVs, aggressive
6 - a combination of all previous heat levels
Moving on to events, I’d like to see circuits, sprints, drags, drifts (trials, touge), impromptu races between roaming racers or other players (drift, sprint, outrun), pink slip races between bosses and other players, more fair police Ambushes and tournaments. All of these should be scattered thoughout the map, with NO RESTRICTIONS whatsoever, with easily identificated checkpoints and neon barriers signalizing the event route and there should be story and non story races (basically optional races not required for completing the storyline). Also, Ghost should add special events for extra parts, cash or a photo opportunity (either for showing us best spots for photography, or revive the magazine showcases from Underground 2). The events should be fully customizable after completing once, for example let us change the weather, amount of traffic, cops and other drivers.
As for cop events, there should be MW 2005 style milestones like pursuit duration, cost to state, bounty, roadblock and spikestrip dodge, trade paint and disable cops infractions.
Let me start on this topic by saying: NO SPEED CARDS AND NO RANDOMLY GENERATED STUFF!
Performance customization should return to 2015, with many individual parts to choose from. They should also be from many different real life brands like Greddy, HKS, Borla, Apex-i etc.
All cars should be without any level caps, but in tiers 1-3. I’d like to take a starter car from start to finish with upgrades.
Tuning should return from 2015 with all options available for all cars - stability control, downforce, brake bias, sway bars, launch control etc. There should be no car classes (race, drag drift), we should be able to tune our car how ever we like whenever we like, so live tuning better be a thing as well.
In my honest opinion, I don’t mind brake-to-drift physics. But if many people go against it, I think Ghost should add a slider for the handling.
Drift - cars will handle specifically for drift events and slide everywhere.
Race - a combined handling of Race and Runner specs from Payback.
Grip - a BlackBox style handling (or at least how the police Corvette in Payback handles).
Drag - cars will wheelie and behave like in Drag spec.
However, like I said before, there should be no event restrictions, so we can easily do our favourite circuit race in a drift car.
There should be multiple dealerships scattered throughout the map. For variety, they should be either continent based (Asian, American, Italian, German…), or car class based (everyday cars, muscle, SUV, supercars, hypercars…), with different interiors and the ability to walk around the dealership and interact with the cars (look around them, open doors, hood, trunk, get in, horn, start engine) and with a test drive feature where you can go around the whole map without cops for 5 or 10 minutes. Also, I’d like the car unlock cutscenes from Rivals to make a return, as well as narrated car descriptions.
As for garages, they should also be scattered throughout the map with different interiors, they should be purchasable and with unlimited car slots as a default option. We should be able to also walk around and interact with our cars, swap vehicle placements like in previous games, customize, paint and wrap our cars, view them, change camera, sell cars, and finally go to photo mode without mods. Also, we should be able to customize our garages.
I’d like to see dynamic weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, post rain, sun and rain, storm) as well as day and night cycle, and clouds.
A few things here. Graphics should be at least like Rivals and 2015 combined and with minimal to no downgrades. It’s safe to say that Payback is the worst looking Frostbite NFS game. Ghost should stay away from Payback in terms of graphics.
This is one of the few things that was perfectly executed in Payback. So take the Payback Snapshot Pro mode, add the option to pause the world (preferrably also in multiplayer), have the option to change the time of day, toggle cops/traffic on and off, adjust wheel positioning, open doors, hood and trunk, let the photo mode have little to no boundaries, and bam.
Also, if Ghost can add a filter (or a frame) to resemble a magazine cover, that would be amazing.
Moving on to multiplayer, I’d like to have a multiplayer similar to MW2012. Let us have the option to either do customizable, categorized speedlists (casual, ranked, races only, drifting only, activities only, mixed, no collisions… ), or online freeroam with all races, shops and options enabled plus some multiplayer games like cops and robbers, infected, king etc. Also, we should be able to make our own private speedlists and freeroam sessions. As for the player count, 8 players is a too small amount, increase it to 15, 20 or even 30. I’m also suggesting Ghost to fix the bad netcode and ranks as well. The emote chat from Payback can also return.
Another addition to multiplayer would be car meet spots, located at car parks, warehouses etc., where we can park our car with other players, check our other cars, interact with them, bet the owners for cash or pinkslip, take photos, do donuts or drag races to please the crowd and thing like that. NPCs could also walk around the area and maybe take pics of the cars.
Let’s talk about the soundtrack. It should fit an illegal, urban car culture, street racing game, so rock, pop, trap, electro, dance, even a little bit of metal as well. But, some people don’t like some genres or songs, so there should be a return of EA Trax - an option to play songs randomly or sequentially in races, menus, both, or turn them off completely. Or how about an addition of a custom playlist from songs on Spotify, or from a folder in the savegame?
As for specific artists, I’d like to see artists like Twenty One Pilots, Alison Wonderland, Deadmau5, Aero Chord, Run The Jewels, The Crystal Method, Linkin Park, 30 Seconds To Mars, Prodigy, Pendulum, Post Malone, Fall Out Boy etc.
I’d also like to see some beautiful song on there (example being The Crystal Method - Smile, Underworld - To Heal etc.), or the return of iconic NFS songs.
This is one of the most controversial topics for me on this post, and that’s DLCs and support.
Let’s start with DLC. I’d like to see either free, or really cheap DLCs in form of three or four car packs, or a map expansion. No cutting content for DLC like Criterion did with the airport and BMW M3 GTR in MW2012, no paywalls.
And updates? They should be free no matter what. Free cars, free customization parts, free bug fixes, free events. Also, removing perfectly fine customization parts and then re-adding them back as updates is not good. This happened in Payback with the Rocket Bunny wing for the Honda NSX, or the large taillights for the Volkswagen Golf GTI MK1.
Another controversial topic, the economy. I liked the payout from events in Payback, but the vehicle prices in 2015, so again, a combination of the two would be great.
NO GRINDING. I dislike when Theo (BlackPanthaa) says that games should be grindy, I hate grinding with a burning passion. Grinding is one of the reasons why Payback was so disappointing. Grinding is one of the reasons why The Crew is so tedious and frustrating to play. Say no to grinding.
Make them subtle, no nostalgia bait. They could be nods to, or even appearances of classic cars/characters from previous games, for example imagine Brooke Burke as Rachel randomly appearing in the next game. Or, make some references to other games, whether to EA games (Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield) or other competitors (Forza, Gran Turismo).
Next topic on my list is Autolog. It should display and recommend only the times or scores of your friends, I don’t see a point of some random guy’s score displaying in my game. Another pointless thing, don’t base recommendations of the REP that my friends received in that particular event, I disliked that in 2015 because it was impossible to beat.
We should be able to toggle Autolog on/off even when online to avoid any distractions. I think there should be a “competitive mode” feature, when all distractions and obstacles like traffic and cops disappear, so we can focus on the time/score set by our friends. Also, if we manage to beat the recommendation, we could receive bonus cash and REP.
There should be a lot for us to do in the game world, even after the story completion. Activities and collectibles for example. For activities, I’d like the drift zones, speed zones, speedtraps and jumps to return from Payback, but make the AI cars ghosted or disable them for not messing up our score.
As for collectibles, I’d like the free parts and vista spots from 2015 to come back. Collectible chips from Payback can return too, but please make the hitboxes and placement better.
Photo mode challenges (similar to TDU2 or The Crew 2) can also be added for that extra content to do.
After completing either an activity or finding a collectible, we could receive some bonus cash, REP and after completing all of them, some bonus content like a unique variant of a car or a wrap.
Payback introduced another collectible - rusty wrecks called derelicts and various abandoned cars. I think this was also a great feature and it should come back as well. There should be multiple of them scattered on the map (5 or 10 would be an ideal number), and after finding them all, not only it would be added to our garage, but also in the dealerships. Ideally, I’d choose old cars as derelicts, examples being the ‘65 Mustang or VW Beetle like in Payback.
Abandoned cars on the other hand could be themed cars and iconic NFS rides (Eddie’s, Samantha’s, Rachel’s…) which would randomly appear on the map and after getting in, we’d get a heat level and must escape the cops. After successful escape and drive to the garage, it’d also unlock in the dealership as well. Make these appear at once, not just one and not just for a week, make them stay there.
The wrap and paint editor should return from Payback, with both 2015 and Payback vinyls combined. How many times I wanted to put an iconic NFS vinyl or a dragon on my car, only to discover that there is not any in Payback. Also, increase the wrap slot limit even more, or better yet, disable it. The preset wraps should return from 2015 as well, it was a nice way to not waste a wrap slot and still put a custom paint and decals on our cars.
And lastly, various. This section is dedicated to stuff that I couldn’t put anywhere else.
As the picture suggests, I’d like to see a cockpit view. Not only Ghost modelled the interiors well, but all other competitors have cockpit view, so…
No crash cams. It has been extremely annoying since Burnout and I dislike its presence in NFS as well.
Fast travel anywhere. Or at least to events, activities and dealerships.
If it’s possible, how about Jules De Jongh (Faith Connors from Mirror’s Edge, voice over lady from Burnout Revenge, Paradise, HP2010, MW2012 and Rivals) making a return as well? I like her voice a lot.
Thank you so much for reading to the end, I hope you enjoyed my post. What features would you like to see in the next NFS games? Let me know!
Also, I’d be very happy if you share this post on social media like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit etc., so hopefully NFS and Ghost themselves can see it. Thank you.
