We’re sure Aston Martin’s all-new Vantage GT4 will go on to be very successful. If it sticks around for long enough, it might even surpass its predecessor, a winner in multiple championships of which Aston sold 124.
What it won’t be able to do, however, is rival the original one in the sound department. Effective though the twin-turbo, AMG-sourced V8 might be, it can’t hold a candle to the old 4.7-litre N/A V8.
As its angry din starts to disappear from major race series the world over, you could think about introducing that guttural V8 bark it to your local track day. RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning this 2010 Vantage GT4 - chassis number 048 - at its Monterey sale in August, and it’s ripe for track day glory. It also looks gorgeous in the Aston Martin Racing green/yellow livery - racing cars are especially handsome sans sponsor decals and race numbers, don’t you think?
Despite how it might look now, the GT4 has been used for a smattering of races. More recently, its primary use has been as a track car. Some work will be needed if it’s to return to competition, as the FIA certification for all its safety equipment - the harnesses, seat, fire extinguisher etc - expired in 2014.
If you’re going to run a GT4 machine as a track hack, the Vantage is a good bet. Compared to a lot of more recent GT4 cars it’s a relatively simple and quite robust beast. And did we mention the noise?
The GT4-spec Vantage is a whopping 300kg lighter than the road-going version. The suspension was modified to allow for extra camber and castor, while the brakes were suitably beefed up with four-piston monoblock calipers and two-piece discs up front. To drive, this is in another league compared to the road car.
GT4 chassis number 048 will be offered at no reserve when it goes under the hammer at the Monterey auction, which takes place 15 - 17 August. No estimate has been given, but judging by other GT4s out there, you’re looking at a sum well into six-figure territory. Worth it for winning your next track day in the classiest way possible? Hell yes.
