BMW Confirms Reborn 8 Series For 2018

With the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe square in its sights, BMW has finally given the go-ahead to what will be its largest - and possibly fastest - coupe ever
BMW Confirms Reborn 8 Series For 2018

BMW has finally given the green light for a new 8 Series, with production scheduled to start almost 20 years after the original was killed off.

The large coupe’s development has been going on for some time, but BMW has waited until now to make a call on whether or not to go ahead with the rival for the S-Class Coupe. To mark the occasion the brand has released a teaser image showing a low, sleek roof line and muscular-looking rear wheel arches.

There’s also a small boot lip spoiler that gracefully flicks the edge of the profile line upwards, extending the look of the flat boot lid. A concept car is said to be making its debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este later in May, with production set to start next year.

The original, complete with pop-up headlights, sits at the cooler end of BMW’s back catalogue, and that’s saying something. While the new one isn’t likely to see a V12, sadly, it will be among BMW’s fastest cars. An M8 is rumoured to be on the cards, featuring a twin-turbo V8. We’re looking forward to that.

I don’t think so… When the i8 launched, the journalists asked if a 8 series M was in the works and the answer wad no. Plus, there was a concept of a mid engine supercar which they scrapped to go after the i8. My guess is no, there won’t be a M8 (lol).

I still think the 8 series could feature a V12. Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG sedan and the S65 coupe and the the BMW 760iL M all have V12 options so it’s very likely to see a V12 8 series as well. :).

Doesnt the 7 series still feature a V12 aswell? Correct me if I’m wrong here

I think the M8 should be a V8, but there could be something like an M860i (possibly with Xdrive) as a V12 grand tourer. In a lot of cases, the V8 cars are sportier than the V12s - for example the Audi S8 (V8) is quicker than the W12 A8, and 63-engined AMGs are often faster (or at least sportier-handling) than the 65s due to less weight at the front. But a part of me really wants to see an 8-series super-GT (maybe call it M870i or even M880i) with a pumped-up, higher-revving V12 to rival the Aston Martin Vanquish.

Sure it will feature a V12. What do you mean by ``V12 options´´? You mean the S-Class Sedan, Coupe and the BMW 7-Series Sedan have V12 options.
