Frankfurt: Audi A2 Concept
Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz didn't make names for themselves producing mini cars, MPVs and small hatchbacks. However, a large part of their future is being staked on these segments. With a good amount of volume up for grabs, it will be a highly competitive market.

BMW is previewing its effort with the i3 Concept. While it is in concept form at the moment, a production car has already been approved as part of BMW's front-wheel drive small car plans.
Mercedes-Benz has redesigned versions of its A and B-Class models on the way. Where does that leave Audi, which recently introduced the A1 minicar? Without a competitor, that's where. A new A2 Concept offers a look at what Audi's reentry into the segment could look like.
Yes you caught that right, reentry. While it wasn't sold in the United States, Audi released an A2 for the European market. It was produced from 1999 to 2005. The A2 is just concept for now, but with Audi's aggressive growth strategy production is likely.
The A2 comes in shorter and narrower than the A1, which probably forms its basis. Right now there aren't many details available on the hatchback, but we do know it is said to seat four people and has a flat interior floor designed to maximize space.
Frankfurt promises to be an exercise in extremes for Audi, which is introducing a lineup of extremely powerful S models along with environmentally-concious electric vehicle projects. Stay tuned for more details on the A2 Concept closer to the Frankfurt show.
