AACA Charlotte AutoFair Wrap-Up
I've been dragging the coverage of the AutoFair out for a bit now, so I'll finish up what I have to show today.
I've been dragging the coverage of the AutoFair out for a bit now, so I'll finish up what I have to show today. There was just simply too much to cover at this show, which is always a good thing - but it makes it harder to pick what to show! I'll round out the coverage today so you all can get a sense of the variety the show had to offer, which was immense.
I LOVE these cars. This is a fox-body Saleen Mustang, which is an extremely rare site - these date back to the beginning of Saleen as a brand, and they were thoroughly worked-over just like modern ones. I can personally attest that Fox Body Saleens with Racecraft suspension are quite good on an autocross - having seen one lay the smackdown on quite a few more powerful F-bodies a few years back in Pittsburgh.
This custom hotrod really caught my attention, what with the racing-style pushrod suspension, massive sticky tires, and lopey cammed V8. I bet it's a bit twitchy, but how fun does this thing look like?
This is what I call "the perfect stance." This classic Camaro had a 100k+ pricetag on it, a fully built aluminum 427ci V8, and massive Baer brakes covered by some perfect Fikse alloys. The way this car hunkers down is just sublime; ultimate kudos to the builder of this beautiful car.
Here's a (pretty decent) replica of the bizarre yet adored Plymouth SuperBird, with it's aerodynamic nose cone and gigantic spoiler. I love the color. Not sure about the nose cone.
This appears to be a Ford hotrod of some sort. I know Paul will help me out with identifying it. How about those wheels? I think some CNC machining was involved there, possibly. There was a glut of older 60's cars with fancy custom wheels lowered on airbags... it's a nice look but a bit overplayed. It works, though.
I know, I know. Another Grand National. What can I say? These cars are epic. Sadly this one had a price tag of almost $19,000, which is a bit too much for a 23 year old Buick. Goes to show how awesome these cars really are that no one can afford them...
How about a Bricklin SV-1? Malcolm Bricklin's brainchild, the V8 powered "safety sports car" was a commercial flop. Even worse, people mistake them for Deloreans, which is just criminal. This is the second one i've seen in my lifetime.
Jag's E-Type is the second prettiest car ever made, right after the Lamborghini Miura. This is all that needs to be said. Car as rolling sculpture, a goddess with wheels, etc. Love it.
Volkswagen's "Thing", the Beetle-based "off roader" was also called the Type 181 or the Kurierwagen. It's a completely pointless car, but find me another off roader with more character and charm than this. I'd love to have one.
Well, that's all I've got for ya! The show was completely fantastic, and you can bet I'll be back again next year with my camera, bringing more drool-worthy pictures to you guys. Hope you enjoyed it.
