600bhp GT-R Nismo Is A Hypercar-Baiting Godzilla
Nissan has unveiled the GT-R Nismo, a race-inspired version of its flagship supercar. Performance has been improved by Nissan Motorsport courtesy of engine and suspension upgrades and fettled aerodynamics.
Under the vented bonnet, the 3.8-litre engine benefits from Nismo know-how gained from racing GT-Rs. The V6 now makes 600hp and 481lb/ft of torque thanks to new high-flow, large diameter turbochargers used in GT3 racing. It also gets optimised individual ignition timing control for each cylinder and an upgraded fuel pump to improve combustion.
Nismo has used the latest simulation techniques to analyse airflow to develop an aerodynamic package that generates an additional 100kg of downforce at 186mph when compared to the standard road-going car. The aero package has the added bonus of making the GT-R look badass, aided by the old-school 6-spoke alloys inspired by the legendary GT500 race car.
The reworked suspension is inspired by the Nismo racing GT-R's setup, with springs and custom Bilstein dampers tuned to deliver grip suitable for spirited driving.
All of this has culminated in a Nurburgring lap time of 7 minutes, 8 seconds, making it the fastest volume production car to lap the famous track. Even if it just sounds like manufacturers are making up 'Ring records to break, that's a mighty impressive time - the ridiculously rapid Porsche 918 Spyder lapped the Green Hell just 11 seconds quicker.
The Nissan GT-R Nismo will be available in Japan in late February 2014, while the U.S. and Europe have to hold on until later in 2014.
