As many as 30 million Americans could be about to buy an electric car, according to a AAA survey that definitely has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The study found that rising driving ranges, lower purchase prices and more infrastructure were reasons why one in every seven of the nation’s inhabitants are warming to the idea to the point of parting with cash.

For Millennials, that figure rises to one in five Americans, suggesting that younger people are far more accepting of new technologies and cleaner cars. Across all ages, though, it’s Tesla leading the charge (fnar) to improve public perceptions of electric cars.

Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of Automotive Engineering said:

“Tesla — a standout in AAA’s evaluations — has helped widen the appeal of electric vehicles by showing they can be stylish, performance-focused and filled with cutting-edge technology.”

This news comes despite US petrol prices being around 40 per cent lower than they were five years ago. Hybrids are also doing well in the public opinion stakes, says the study, with 70 per cent of those questioned rating fuel economy as ‘an important factor’ in choosing their next car, compared to 50 per cent for safety tech, 48 per cent for brand and 34 per cent for technology.

What say you, America? Are you going green?

I’m not in that group lol. Neither is anybody near me. Gasoline is on average $2 USD here. Electric is more expensive. Not as fun, either.

But I thought Americans LOVED their old V8s like Impalas, Mustangs and so on. Is the car culture over there like that, or is it changing due to these eco tech things?

Am I a shame to car community if I love EV’s?

Not at all. EVs have their merits. I’ve been in a briskly driven Nissan Leaf and the silent acceleration is something

To some car guys a screaming engine is not their first concern, it’s too bad you can’t get a 6 speed in an EV though.

The same here. I am having a hard time deciding between Audi SQ5 and Volvo XC60 T8 twin engine (as a replacement for my current Forester). To me, plug in a car is pretty cool.

As a millennial, I’m guessing I’m in a minority by saying I’m pleasantly surprised by this news? But I think this is great 👍🏻

As long as it is not a Tesla, I’d be open to the possibility. Even so, I don’t think electric cars are the solution until we have more efficient ways of producing electricity than burning coal. Until that day, the ICE will remain prominent and very, very dominant.

Here’s the secret… Drive an EV on weekdays, then on weekends, bring out your monster of a V8 to offset your offset. Or just do plenty of burnouts in your EV.
