How Has A Car Saved Your Life Or Helped You Out Of A Really Rough Patch?

While looking through our YouTube archives, I stumbled across a video we shot of a man whose car helped him fight and beat cancer. So I wondered, do you have a story to share too?

Cars are special to people like us. They have character, charm and quirks. They irritate us, they lift our mood when we’re feeling low and they make us shout out in anger when something breaks.

Sometimes, however, the bond between man and machine goes far deeper. In the video you’ll have seen above, Jon Livermore’s Evo helped him combat and overcome the toughest fight people face every single day: cancer.

And so then I wondered: how has a car saved your life or helped you through a really rough patch? I’m interested to hear your stories.

I wouldnt say it was a car that saved me. But 11 years ago i watched my younger brother die right in front of me at 8 years old he was having a heart attack. Being a teenager i didnt understand these things, ( you know the mentatlity “only old people die”) but it happened in front of me. It crushed me left me a mess. But anyway me my dad and my brother always went to small racing events together get up bright and early on a sunday morning make the 1 hour drive to the race track and watch these cars fly around a track from about 8 am til 6 pm. shortly after my brother died it was the race at the circuit near my house my dad took me down there to just try and pick me up get me out the house. And that day was the first time i saw my dad react to the death. It made me realise it wasnt just me going through a hard time. We sat and watched 10 hours of racing and went and met the race teams and the drivers and sat in the race cars it was a great day in the end. That day helped me make my decision on life what i wanted to do had to be car related it was all i knew and all that could keep my mind busy. I started training as a mechanic when i left school became a mechanic. I enjoyed that but started getting bored as i wasnt being challenged i then went to university to study, motorsport engineering design technology and management (passing with flying colours) I now work for an automotive engineering company and love my job. and it wasnt until i started reading these comments that it made me think how i ended up here.

I had really bad depression a few years ago and considered suicide but my cousin has a 2004 Subaru WRX and what got me through those days was going over to his house after school and working on that car with him.

I wouldn’t quite say a car saved my life, but I was going through depression when I bought my car and started learning how to drive it. When that happened, suddenly driving was the only thing that mattered. It was a fun and useful skill, and I would wake my dad up at random times asking to go for a drive any time I could.

For me a year ago I found out my parents were getting a divorce. I played soccer (football) at the time but got bored and unmotivated. Then I found cars and how interesting and fun they are. That was something to get my mind off of it. Now it’s my passion.

Also last fall my 29 year old cousin was diagnosed with ALS. And he and my uncle had always been into cars. But now we started talking more about them and has been nice to have more in common and be with him more in his last year or two.
