Why the Superbird and Daytona have enormous wings
Have you ever wanted to know why the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird have these enormous spoilers?
What is your idea? To look cool? Naah.
More downforce? Maybe but it wouldn’t have to be THAT big.
To get more places to put stickers on? Nope, these cars are huge, they already have enough places.
Big wang gang
Okay, one hint - it has nothing to do with NASCAR and actually it is just there to make the car more practical.
I know. There are more pictures than text...
Okay, I will tell you.
Prepared for the greatest (and most useless) piece of information you’ll ever read?
Can you see it? Yes! The Charger Daytona and the Roadrunner Superbird have these giant wings just to make the boot lid fit under them.
Am I the only one who thinks they could’ve just mounted it on the boot lid? I mean, it is one of the most famous designs in the entire world but it wasn’t really necessary, right?

I didn’t knew that! Amazing fact, I always thought that they made like that to make the car look better
And because muscle car
How much of car design is really functional particularly wings or spoilers but it still looks beautiful. Interesting post
This one was actually 100% functional. Its the reason Plymouth and dodge ruled NASCAR for the few years this was allowed.
It actually is still functional, as it provides a tremendous amount of downforce at high speeds. But yes, it could have been lower if not for the trunk needing to fit under it
OH. MYGAHD.
they dominated Nascar due to the downforce
They put it that high so it catches all the air going over the roof creating the most downforcd possible and the didn’t mount it on the trunk so that the vertical pillars on the spoilers catches the most air. Past the sides to keep it straight
THANK YOU
It helps for rear visibility too
That car can get up to around 200 mph, I think a car of that size is goint to need some serious down force to keep it on the road.
The whole car was very functional. It was banned from NASCAR after a few seasons because it was too functional.
