I think you are right, aftermarket gas tanks behind the axle for better weight to the rear wheels.
Its just a guess, but I would say that tank is designed to be quickly removable for some kind of short racing. In drags, most of the more dedicated racers just use small drag tanks, around 5 gallons, so I would assume that this tank is something to put on the car that will give you a larger fuel capacity for extended driving times.
need a bigger fuel tank but half the time under the car is the only place a bigger one will fit. drop tanks are sort of an attempt at making fuel tanks look nicer and on the right car can change its appearance entirely
when i see this all i think is “drop the tombstone”
