Crowning Glory

The Ford Crown Victoria is one of the most iconic cars in History. For decades, it’s been the go-to car for the United States Police Force and Taxicab Industry. The infamous New York Yellow Cab is the best selling vehicle in New-York, as a taxi. There isn’t an American film or TV series set in modern times that doesn’t have a Crown Vic in it. This particular Crown Vic is from the movie ‘Taxi’’ starring Queen Latifah and Jimmy Fallon.

The first generation Crown Victoria was launched in 1992, though the nameplate has a longer history stretching to the 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria. The name is an obvious reference to Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The 2nd gen (pictured) was launched in 1998 and continued production till 2007 for civilian and 2011 for fleet sales. Every major Hollywood film that is set in the US features dozens of Crown Victorias as either taxicabs or police patrol vehicles. In fact, civilian sales of the car towards thugs are scarce because to them, any Crown Victoria that doesn’t have police-livery and flashing lights, and isn’t yellow, is an undercover cop-car.

The body-on-frame construction, and the strong body makes it quick-and-easy to repair, while the powerful 4,7lit V8 makes it a brute on the road, which is ideal for the Police Force and Taxicab industry. Top Gear hosted an event for an episode which included Taxicabs from around the globe: A stretched Lincoln Town-Car representing Russia; Mercedes-Benz E-Class representing Germany; Volkswagen Beetle representing Mexico; Hindustan Ambassador representing India; The infamous London Black Cab representing England; Toyota Hi-Ace Minibus representing South Africa and the Ford Crown Victoria New York Yellow Cab. The intention of the gathering was to host a race between them. Richard Hammond even noted that with the car’s powerful V8 and strong body, ‘’that’s one to worry about’’. His instinct was correct, as the Yellow Cab collided with the Lincoln Limousine on one of the laps and consequently split the limo in half in quite spectacular fashion, though it did take itself out of the race in the process.

The Crown Victoria is still in service with the Police and Taxicab Industry, but it has been largely replaced with the Ford Taurus
