My Polish Adventure...

My Polish Adventure... - Retro and Classics

I’ve wanted a Fiat 126 for a number of years now, and as they seem to be few and far between in the UK, I took it as an excuse to hit the road. I flew to Poland and bought this beautiful little steed to drive home in. As to be expected with a Polish made Fiat, we hit a few mechanical issues along the way. First thing was the starter motor - nothing that cant be rectified with a gentle tap of a hammer before each start (fortunately I came prepared). The second thing to give up was the alternator. The bearings had gone half way along the A4 - Poland’s main motorway across the country. The little Fiat and I tested out Krakow’s finest recovery truck after having a stern talking to from the Polish police who were in utter disbelief that anyone would come to Poland to buy a Fiat 126 to drive home, and then have the audacity to attempt a bump start on the hard shoulder of a major motorway. Ooops! Apologies, Poland.

We sourced a new alternator from a shop that resembled something from that early 2000’s programme “Life of Grime” - essentially the owner appeared to be a car parts hoarder with a till, but the following day we were back on the road!

Then came issue number three. The clutch gave up in the middle of Germany. When I say gave up, I mean well and truly. However, where there is a will there is a way and this little Fiat is making it back to Devon on a trailer where a new clutch is waiting patiently in my garage for him. Im off to Germany with a trailer to collect my poor life choice…
