I made a very rough anti glare (pancake) close quarters welding hood today.
So there I was in a cramped confined space this morning, welding in a water tight pipe. Continuously smashing my bulky hood against beams and seeing more of my face’s reflection in my lens than the weld itself. Then suddenly a thought ran through my head about a hood used by pipeline welders. The pancake.
Now this is no where near the quality of an actual pancake, and instead of sheet metal I used an old fire blanket and cut a rectangle for the goggles it fit in. I used an old set of cutting goggles that honestly probably needed thrown away years ago but they cleaned up nicely. I slid the flip up lens off, replaced the #7 cutting lens with a #10 welding, put on the fire blanket drape and slid the lens back on and that was that.
I did just test it out, and honestly once your eyes adjust it worked perfectly, I was amazed by how well I could see the puddle and the surrounding area. I didnt think cutting out background light would make such an impact but it did, not only that its drastically lighter than my Jackson BOSS and alot cooler (temperature wise)
For 20 minutes of my time and using junk I think this worked out great.
