Is turbo flutter bad?

So i came across a forum where people say that a fluttering turbo is really bad for you engine. Can you guys tell me if it is true and why?

I don’t think it is. And if it is it’s only bad for turbo. With high turbo pressure if you don’t use BOV your turbo could break down faster.

Turbo flutter isn’t bad for the engine or turbo. It is however bad for performance. When the throttle shuts off the built up boost has nowhere to go so it goes backwards and therefore the turbo spins backwards as well. This means that now it will take more time to get the turbo spinning in the right direction again.

Turbo isn’t spinnig backwards, the boost is only slowing it…

If you use a BOV, this gives the excess boost an escape route when the throttle shuts off. Consequently the turbine will not lose all of its kinetic energy and will take less time to spoil when you get back on the throttle.

but there are bov’s that make the flutter sound after you lift up the throttle, are those bad too then?

I’m wondering the same thing don’t know whether to get a wastegate for my scooby apparently it’s ok but if the wastegate fails in anyway then the turbo gets damaged or something like that I can’t really find anything with a straight answer ???

I will try to explain that. Your turbo in Subaru have internal wastegate, which is inside turbine housing. The wastegate regulates the amount of exhaust gases which flows throught the turbine and this regulates the amount of air which turbo sucks. So it regulates the boost pressure. You can buy external wastegate which is installed on exhaust manifold before the turbine. The advantage of External wastegate is that it provides better constant flow of exhaust gases throught turbine wheel. Therefore it increases the efficiency of turbine therefore the power.

The Flutter of an Open Blow Off Valve is nothing bad. When you lift up your throttle pressure will still build up, and if this pressure has no where to go, it will go back to the compression wheel and slow it down. Having a blow off valve will lead that pressure out in to the atmosphere. This pressure works against a spring force in the BOV, onece the pressure is strong enough to open the valve this air will go out until the pressure is lower again the spring will close the valve and pressure will rise again. That what makes the “sututu” sound, because the valve is constantly opening and closing. And no it wont hurt the turbo.

The stututu noise is there only when you do not have BOV…

go on mcm tv2 and they posted a video i found super helpful basically it called compressor surge and its where there is extra pressure when you let off the accelerator and the only way it can go is backwards yes it can cause damage but only if your running higher boost 12-18 psi (depending on the car)
