How to make a 12 second Fox (CHEAP)

So, I decided it was the time to upgrade my Foxbody. I wanted to shave 3 seconds off of my 15.2 second 1/4 time. I started by upgrading the heads and intake with the Ford Explorer GT40’s I got off a junk yard car for $64. Then, I ordered a 70mm TB, Cold Air, and 24# injectors and all together was right at $250. The car was tuned by a friend for $100 and the car was making 297 whp and 356 lb of torque. I later ran the car at a local track and made 12.47 @132 mph. So, no you don’t need expensive stuff to make a car fast. Plus the pushrod 302 loves bolt ons.

Did you change the springs in the heads?

Didn’t say anything about a cam, so I’m guessing stock ho?

300 HP at the pavement through stock cam and GT40 heads? No exhaust or nothing? Then what on earth is the point of the $2.5k Trickflow HCI kits?

The car does have a H-pipe that came with the car. I forgot to mention that.

These are insane results!
Did you do anything else to suspension or tires?

I think the key here is the tune. Obviously GT40 heads and intake are a big improvement, but getting a tune to match is what really locks it in. Nice success story and good job modding on a budget.

I’m going back in a few days because I put camber plates, struts, and control arms on. I’ll try to remember to post it.

Anyone reading through this.. The explorers used GT40P heads, they are nearly the same, but the valve springs are a major reliability issue.. Change the valve springs with at least a set of no name summit hardend springs before you install.. It will really help performance and longevity.. Aside from the springs, the GT40 and GT40P heads are identical..
