When car makers downsize their engines, why must they reduce cylinder number?

theres loads of 2.0L 4 cylinder cars out there, why not treat us with something like a 2.0L straight 5 or a 2.0L V6
heck how about a 2.0 L straight six like the Toyota L20 or nissan RB20 or BMW M50???
