My Thoughts on The Alfa Romeo Stelvio #opinion

Alfa Romeo - My Thoughts on The Alfa Romeo Stelvio #opinion - Blog

After the reveal of the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio, I see it have a mixed reception among Alfisti on the internet. Some like it, while other hate it, saying it is not a true Alfa Romeo and it will be a brand dilution to Alfa Romeo.

Here, in this post, I will talk about what I thought on the Stelvio.

The Car

I don’t want to touch about the technical aspect of the car because that can be searched on the internet. Just sharing my opinion about it.

Basically, I didn’t hate the car. Even as an Alfista, I don’t see why would I hate it. If saying it would not be suitable to the Alfa Romeo brand, people needs to remember that the Stelvio is not the first SUV that have came in mind for Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo have developed an SUV concept named the Kamal in 2003, which is almost the same year that Porsche Cayenne started into production. Should it enters production, it could be Alfa’s first production SUV.
and even before the Fiat era, Alfa Romeo have produced vehicles such as trucks as buses. Alfa even have produced Alfa Romeo Matta, a Jeep-look-a-like vehicle and Alfa Romeo New York Taxi, a vehicle that can be considered an MPV although it just remained a concept.

Although I didn’t hate the Stelvio, I can’t seem to love it, yet. I was like “hmm… okay, I kinda like it.” I like the design but it looks like a jacked-up hatchback. Maybe I would love the Stelvio if I can see it in real life and get a ride in it, but it will be unlikely as there are no official distributors or dealerships for Alfa Romeo in Malaysia after the then-current distributor of Alfa Romeo in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors decided to stop being an official distributor in 2013. Sadly, that means the 4C, the new Giulia and the Stelvio had to come to my country through grey import dealers until someone else took over to be an official distributor.

More Thoughts on The Stelvio

  • As an Alfa Romeo, it is not as pointless as what others would say. I believe Maserati Levante is more pointless than Alfa Romeo Stelvio as I would never though Maserati will produce an SUV, and yet we have one right now. I would like a variety in the Alfa Romeo line up but I hope they more focused on producing more normal cars than SUV. Like 5 cars, 1 SUV only.

  • As I have said, the Stelvio looks like a jacked-up hatchback. And with the Giulietta replacement model rumored to be developed on the Giorgio platform, it is not impossible that the Giulietta replacement model might looks like the Stelvio but a bit smaller and lower.
The Giulietta replacement might have rear like this.

  • And finally, I think this might the only SUV produced by Alfa Romeo. Because if they going to produce smaller SUV, it might compete with Fiat while going for a larger SUV, it might compete with the Maserati Levante. I hope FCA doesn’t force Alfa to follow the SUV craze much more.

Conclusion

I don’t hate the Stelvio, but it might take more than the look to make me love it. Maybe if I am gonna buy one, I just go for the base model, because if I am looking for power and speed, I might just go to the Giulia Quadrifoglio. What do you guys think of the Stelvio?
