Anybody on here ever build and run a demolition derby car?

A buddy of mine and I have talked about doing demolition derbies one summer for a few years now. Has anyone ever done it before? I know you can get a car to run for a few hundred bucks, but what other $ costs come along afterwards? From getting the car to the drop of the green flag, how much did it cost?

Really comes down to “rules and regs”. What safety equipment is needed (required) for example can run up a couple hundo. Otherwise a hillbilly demo derby would still be fun. Just reinforce the critical areas which would be crumple zones so the cars used dont come to a hault because a fly landed on the bumper. Dont try to make it bulletproof either, no fun in that. I guess what im trying to say… depends if this is an official derby or backyard. Backyard: limitless or pointless to change anything other than maybe a helmet, safety glasses and remove the glass panels but wear thicker clothes or safety clothing. A glass shard to the juggular would ruin your evening. Official: meet the safety requirements for wherever you are going. Could be 3-400$, could be a couple grand. Or more.

Thanks a lot bud. I figured besides the cost of the car and the obvious labor time to prep it, a few hundred would be needed to get it ready to go. It’s definitely on my list of thing to do once I’m out of college.

My dad bought an old 80s caddy and ran it through a demo derby. He painted it like the hulk the first time (complete with foam caulk fists, bow wow’s Tokyo drift vw style), then with a spongebob theme the second time. Don’t remember the details as I was young, but I thought it was pretty cool!

One of the things I get most excited about is how people make their cars look. Headers coming straight up through the hood, welding up the diff, and having a blast with a couple cans of spray paint gets me all amped up.
