Hi Guys, I started to look into BMW E90's 320i. Would you recommend them as a first car? How high are the maintenance costs? Big thanks in advance!

im just gonna say first……. also rwd is not really a good idea as a first car, oversteer can slow down learning to drive, it can be annoying. otherwise, buy away!

Thanks for the comment :) I’m not really that worried about it being RWD as I do have experience with similar drivetrains ;) Im almost sure I’ll be getting a Porsche 944 but a clean E90 recently popped up on Craigslist and I started thinking about the car more seriously… Im interested what the owners have to say about it :)

Yeah maintaince is one thing that I’m worried about. I don’t expect servicing a BMW to be very cheap but I’d hope it won’t break my budget everytime I need something checked :) I still need to get a lot of money to afford it but it’s definitely an interesting option.

I know somebody who has an E91 330xi Touring. He doesn’t have many issues, only the exhaust. It had some rust holes in it so he had to weld it. Luckily we have MIG welding machine so it didn’t cost anything but if you’ll need to buy a new exhaust it’s going to be pretty expensive. A new exhaust costs around 2500 Euros. Rust mabey on the trunk. And look for a facelift model from 2009 or 2010. And for first car mabey an AWD version. If you’ve had some experience in RWD cars before, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Awesome thank you for such an in-depth answer. If I would get an E90 it would be probably be the 320i which is a sedan or a limousine however you wish to call it ;) I do have some experience with RWD cars so I doubt that will be a major concern of mine. Thanks once again!

My friend had one and he said simple repairs or maintainance that would cost like $30 or any other car was like $120 for him

They are reliable only if they have been maintained, so don’t get one with high millage and no history. Maintenance will be expensive compared to many other brands because well its a premium german brand. But they are such fun cars to drive and are great all rounders, i have an e46 and its awesome

Will you want to keep it or just “destroy” it? If it’s to destroy, just buy something cheaper. If it’s a keeper, try the 320d also, or a bigger petrol. Maintenance is not cheap… But it really is an “all you need” car.

I’m planning on keeping my first car for about 2 years. No serious mods, just daily driving and maybe some European road trips :) I’m also thinking about the Porsche 944. For now I’m trying to make enough money to afford either of them but I am pretty sure it will be possible :)

Nice. If you’re going to daily drive it go for the bmw. It’s better. And if you’re looking for the 944, at least look for the turbo. But why don’t you just go with something cheaper that can hold it’s value better? You’ll only have it for 2 years… Anyway, just try to test drive a few cars before you choose.

I want to get something really classy, elegant, fast and reliable. While of course some cars won’t hold their value as good as others would they also bring some excitement to the table. Im still thinking about the logistics of how and when to buy a car. Might be getting one in 2017 or 2018 when I’m in high school in poland but since I want to study abroad I might buy a car when I’m at uni or maybe even after that
