Debate will rage forever about what the best-ever Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is, but to cut a long story short, it’s the Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition.

How do you improve on such rally-derived road-going perfection? Well, you make it better from the factory in the form of the RS Tommi Makinen Monte Carlo Edition, and you only make five of them.

Needless to say, these absolute icons of the early 2000s don’t come up for sale very often. So hooray for Iconic Auctioneers, who are offering the final 5-of-5 car for auction in February. It has just 3,497 miles on the clock and one (presumably very careful) owner. The price? Well, it’s expected to fetch between £100,000 and £120,000. Absolute bargain.

So what makes this special edition of a special edition so good? After all, the standard Evo VI was great and the TME (built to celebrate the legendary Finnish rally driver’s four-street World Rally Championship titles) was even better, thanks to upgrades like a beefier turbo, upgraded exhaust, tweaked ECU and proper Enkei rally alloys.

Well, the RS Monte Carlo version was inspired by Makinen’s third win on the Monte Carlo Rally. Using the standard competition RS model as a template, the Ralliart Technical Team, under the guidance of Mitsubishi’s actual WRC boss, Toney Cox, decided to build 12 even more hardcore versions. But they only completed five, making this one the ultimate Evo in several different ways.

Anyway, it’s got a Ralliart UK Stage 1 engine performance pack for even more acceleration and improved throttle response. The suspension has been further upgraded with bespoke Eibach springs and revised geometry. There’s also a close-ratio gearbox and a Group N rally-spec front diff. Oh, and some Recaro SR front seats.

Sold to the first and only owner in July 2001, this basically factory fresh car comes with the original invoice and has been checked over by rally prep specialists ahead of the sale.

Go on, find a better Evo. We dare you.
