Sorry, A Sportier BMW 'i8 S' Just Isn't Going To Happen

Pining for a sharper, faster version of the i8? Don't hold your breath
Sorry, A Sportier BMW 'i8 S' Just Isn't Going To Happen

Outside of Photoshop specials done for teh lolz, an M Division version of the BMW i8 - an i8 M, if you will - hasn’t yet happened. Nor have we expected it to - the hybrid kinda/sorta sports car doesn’t really fit within the M remit, after all. But how about an i8 S?

We’ve already had the i3 S with more power and a sportier suspension setup, so it’d be reasonable to expect BMW to go a similar route with the i8. But, it turns out it’s not to be.

When asked by Car Advice if customers had been demanding a sharper version of the car, i8 product manager Marcus Pluntke said: “Customers are very happy with the performance it has. Especially as it is so quick, you know the electric motor’s response is like immediately.”

“They don’t say ‘ooh, I need more power’ quite the opposite they say ‘It’s so fast on public roads. I can’t believe how quick it reacts and how quick it is’,” he added.

So that’s a ‘no’ to an i8 S, then, but the standard i8 has already been given a few tweaks. Along with a new Roadster version, BMW has facelifted the car with some aesthetic fiddling, a little more power and some small suspension changes. The electric power steering software has been changed, too.

Both the Roadster and the updated coupe will land in the UK this June.

At least make it fun at the corner, add like 30 more ponies, bmw sheer driving pleasure…………. Even a civic r is faster on the ring……….. C’mon bmw, I am a fan, and I’m slowly giving up, you’re going downhill like mitsubishi, ur only hope is to make the m8 and 8 series good…………

I guess you’re forgetting about the BMW M3-6, the standard varients of them, the 750I, and a lot more. And remeber, the i8 wasn’t made for lap times. It’d simply a sporty car, unlike the civic type R

The Civic Type R is faster than the La Ferrari around the ring

Mainly because Ferrari never released the time.
I don’t see your point.

And if you’re really a fan, you’d know, that the M3/M4 are some of the best handling sports sedans, and the M5 is the fastest, most comfortable, and most involving super saloon in its class.

Comparing bmw to mitsubishi is a really big stretch.
You don’t see an M3 badge on an electric crossover now, do you?

That‘s quite disappointing, but don‘t let this distract you from the fact that Alcantara is actually a brand.

Me before the article: “Imagine an M2 engined i8. So it can rival the NSX.”

Me after: oh okay…

It already rivals the nsx, just not the new one

i honestly dont think the i8 is relavent anymore

i mean the only people who buy these are posers ( Ahem supercar blondie) and its incredibly underpowered and the tech is now as outdated as an iPhone 5s

so like the 5s, why cant they just stop production of the car?

Well it’s not going to be directly replaced as they’re killing the two cars off in 2021

And no, I’d say that if you want something that looks really cool, almost like a concept car, which is a halo car but that has good quality and not as known as a Tesla or something like that, an i8 could be a good choice. I mean, it’s probably the production car which is looking the closest to its concept car that I know of

not of the people who buy the i8 hear are the people who know nothing of cars, rappers, or drug dealers

I found it a very disappointing car to drive. I didn’t find it incredibly fast, even doing times like 30-50 etc it was slower than my modified diesel Skoda.

I also found it to be quite cheaply made. The ‘wings’ down the rear quarters a so wobbly they feel like theyre stuck in with foam tape.
