British Car Breaks World Electric Land Speed Record
Drayson Racing's unique Lola has broken the World Electric Land Speed Record at RAF Elvington in Yorkshire. Lord Drayson was behind the wheel of the Lola B12 69/EV as it recorded a top speed of 204.185mph.
Subject to FIA confirmation, the electric Le Mans prototype smashed the previous record of 175mph, which had stood for 40 years. In their pioneering work with sustainable technologies, Drayson Racing set about challenging for the record to prove that electric vehicles "can be fast and reliable."
Other than the impressive pace the Lola displayed, one of the more fascinating aspects of its design is that it uses wireless charging by QualcommHalo. Development of such technologies is vital to help allay 'range anxiety', as chargers could be placed along the roadside, charging vehicles as they pass.
Following their record setting attempts this week, Drayson Racing will set their sights on Formula E, the electric racing series that will debut next year. Their 2014 vehicle will be built by McLaren and Singapore-based Spark, however they hope to build their own vehicle from 2015.
Earlier in the week we brought you news of Nissan's electric Le Mans racer, so like it or loathe it, electric vehicles are here to stay. We're glad to see there are people applying it appropriately.
