Is a pre 2000 Land Rover Defender a good first car?

Money doesn’t matter too much as my parents will help me pay and I will pay half at the start but is it a good car. They like it as not very fast but is safe. Also it can tackle off road tasks easily which is another bonus for not too much price. I know someone else with a defender as their first car and they say it’s great but I don’t know how much insurance would be?
Please be honest on what you think.
Thanks, James B.

Not an old one. Or a new one. Just stay away from them.

Very expensive, very slow, very unsafe. Pretty cool though, terrible first car

I want a car that can off road and I would probably keep it and get a sportier car because it’s good off road vehicle and put stuff in the pickup

Expensive, uneconomical, unsafe, uncomfortable, unrelieable and I could go on for a bit

I guess but it would be a project and I’d keep it when I got a better car for off roading as I like them and I won’t be going very fast in one.

Depends if you love it enough to risk crashing and dying… still a nice car, wouldn’t mind it as a first car, but if I’m small enough to fit in an MX-5…

Land Rovers are not famous for their reliability - however when it comes to these older ones, they are absolute tanks when it comes to off-roading.

I do need it for off roading and I know people who have them and say they are average at reliability
