Drive A Diesel? You’ll Pay More Tax Very Soon

The UK government is aiming to raise taxes on all diesel cars to pay for local council schemes to 'encourage people out of cars'
Drive A Diesel? You’ll Pay More Tax Very Soon

If you drive a diesel in the UK you might want to look away now. The government is planning to sting you with extra tax – an as-yet unknown amount – in order to cover its pollution-reduction spending plans.

The extra tax take will be divided between local councils running areas where air quality is an issue, giving them the funds to make changes to road layouts or incentivise public transport – or even cycling. The whole idea is to get as many people out of cars as possible, and we don’t even know where to start with the level of rage this causes us. I wonder: have the legislators tried carrying a weekly shop on a bicycle, or arriving at work every day sweating like a pig in a sauna?

Drive A Diesel? You’ll Pay More Tax Very Soon

Parliament will look at changing the road tax system (again) in just a few months, to punish desel cars and vans. It’s likely that the payments for older diesels in particular will be ramped up. As an owner of a 10-year-old diesel workhorse, I’m one of the millions of people who could suddenly have to fork out a lot more to keep my car on the road.

The new tax system, which only came into effect in April, has been heavily criticised for overlooking plug-in hybrids priced above £40,000, all of which have to pay the £310 annual surcharge.

Why does the Government never think about the people?

Because they think with their wallet.

I can’t be the only one that thinks those taxes are going too far.

If you hate them, come to algeria, we don’t have taxes at all, but expect some weird roads

Yeah that’s the problem, diesel cars here work really well but all we need here is a good road network

UK Government: “Hey everyone, buy diesels, you’ll save money and the planet”

15 years later…

“Actually we screwed up… Hey everyone pay more tax to fix the mistake we made to save the planet.”

‘Incentivise public transport’!? Buses are among the worst polluting vehicles!
How about the govt and councils focus on making them more enviro-friendly (maybe we could use.. electricity??) and then maybe people might see the point in giving up their ‘dirty’ diesel.

While yes, they could be way better in terms of pollution I believe (and I do disagree with the government) it is percentage per person. So if a bus uses 100 whatevs to drive, and a car 20. A car is using 20 whatevs of pollution for up to 5 people, whereas a bus is 100 whatevs for up to ~60 people.

I hate the idea of it though, ultimately you pay all this money for your own vehicle and your own privacy, you pay the taxes to use the roads (fair enough) but now are punished because you’re using the roads.

So your government also does stupid things frequently. I thought our government was unique in that way. Stupidity is in daily basis here
