The Porsche 919 Evo Has Just Set A 5m19s Nurburgring Lap Record

Porsche's '919 tribute' has just crushed the 35-year-old outright lap record of the Nurburgring Nordschleife - by 52 seconds! Check out the on-board footage right here

Hold onto your hats – and just about everything else, people – because the all-time outright Nurburgring lap record has just been obliterated.

Porsche’s rules-free 919 Evo, based on its hybrid Le Mans racer but with all the restrictions taken away, has clocked a barely-believable 5m19.545s lap of the famous Nordschleife. Driven by Porsche LMP1 pilot Timo Bernhard, that’s not just a few seconds better than Stefan Bellof’s 1983 lap record; it whacks that 6m11.13s time over the head and eats it for breakfast. It’s not quite under five minutes, but still…

We reported almost a month ago that the 919 had been spotted at the Nurburgring as part of a photoshoot alongside the iconic 956 C, which, not-so-coincidentally, was the car Bellof completed his lap in.

As it turns out, that wasn’t the only reason it was there. Exactly as we’d hoped, the 919 Evo went for the outright lap record. It didn’t just take it, though: it smashed it by 52 seconds.

All we can do is sit, open-mouthed at the astonishing speed of that car. Freed from WEC regulations its new aerodynamics kit adds over 50 per cent more downforce, for corner speeds that should look insane on the on-board footage.

About that, Porsche: please release the on-board footage immediately, so we can spend the next 72 hours watching it on repeat.

EDIT: On-board footage now released and embedded above. Say goodbye to your weekends, everyone.

So…once again we have beaten ourselves when it comes towards developing a car, if Stefan bellof is watching that…what he would say?

he would propably say something along the lines of “it took you 34 years and a unregulated car to beat my record?, i could have probably done it in 10 years”

Yesssss!!! So proud of Porsche!
They finally did it! It’s a moment in a petrol head’s life that’s extremely rare! Kudos!
Tbh they could’ve gone a bit 10sec ish faster but at the risk of the car and the driver.. so this is fantastic!

Very unrelated, but what are the optimal settings for recording in Assetto Corsa? What do you use? I’m using the optimal recording software for my hardware, but I can’t find a compromise in the settings (ingame and for the recording software) wherein I don’t get skips in video and audio. It’s super annoying.

Thank you Porsche for going all-out rather than setting a 6:10

I have no doubt the only brand to beat that record would be Porsche themselves again. Given another 35 years, I bet they could bust into the mid-four’s.

Amazing achivement by Porsche. Will this be another long standing record or wil it open the flood gates for others to try? The only thing I can see wrong with the video is the size of the car. Surely its not big enough for the drivers balls.

The footage is scary. Just look at the speed and how close the walls are. Hats off to Mr. Bernhard.
