If you thought it was impressive that the Ford Mustang outsold the Porsche 911 and the Audi TT in Germany last month, wait until you get a load of this latest stat. Ford has just revealed that the latest coupe version of its pony car shifted 110,000 units last year (plus 30,000 convertibles), making it the “top-selling sports coupe worldwide” and the only car of its kind to sell more than 100,000 examples globally.

Seems like the whole ‘World Car’ approach is working well - these figures will be helped massively by the fact the latest ‘Stang is available in 140 countries.

The V8 is still proving popular, too. Commenting on the news, Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle said: “while much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V8.”

This doesn’t come as a surprise, as in the UK thus far, the eight-banger has accounted for the most sales. “That unmistakable V8 warble is a hot commodity outside the US,” he added, while thinking “Murica!” Probably.

in most countries its pretty much the cheapest coupe with a v8 you can buy so it makes a lot sense that it would be popular. that and actually a nice car my parents have a GT and they love it.

Congrats to Ford! A modern DOHC engine, no ancient live axle rear diff, great looks. What’s not to like.

Ford has had DOHC V8s in mustangs since 1996 in the cobra. And the 1999-2004 cobra had independent rear suspension. The 96-mid 01 cobra aluminum blocks were made in Italy at a factory that makes some Ferrari blocks. 03-04 Cobras were supercharged dohc 4.6s and are good to about 1k wheel hp stock internals. I figured I might as well fill in non mustang people about the exotic (as far as Murican muscle) stuff that the mustang has had.
