A manual gearbox has been conspicuously absent from the 992 Porsche 911 range thus far. But, almost a year on from the car’s reveal, a seven-speed stick shift has finally been announced.

Porsche North America has confirmed that it’s now possible to order a 992 Carrera S or Carrera 4S - as a coupe or convertible - with the manual as a no-cost option. In the past, manual 911 Carreras have been cheaper than their PDK counterparts, but that’s still sort of the case now - ticking the option box will get you the Sport Chrono package for free.

This means all manual 992s will have a steering wheel-mounted mode switch, Dynamic Drivetrain Mounts and PSM Sport Mode as standard. There will also be an auto-rev matching function.

On-the-limit handling will be slightly different, as the electronically-controlled rear differential of the PDK Carrera S has been ditched. In its place is a mechanical limited-slip diff with Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus.

Manual 992s should be in US dealers by Spring 2020. Porsche GB meanwhile told Car Throttle that C2S and C4S models with the option will become available in Europe during the first half of 2020.

It isn’t clear whether or not the base Carrera will be receiving the manual further down the line. A Porsche North America representative informed us it is currently “focusing on offering the gearbox on our most popular models,” and that “Other models may follow in due course”.

We sincerely hope it happens, as a 911 Carrera on small wheels with the seven-speeder might just be the ideal version of the 992. Keep those fingers crossed.
