Jaguar’s decision not just to kill off the ‘R’ brand, but to whack its 5.0-litre supercharged V8 into the F-Pace as part of a raft of SVR treatments, has put us in a shouty, big cat kind of mood. That same 542bhp V8 has seen service in a lot of silly, fantastic Jaguars over the years, and here’s one you might have forgotten.

The XFR-S was Jaguar’s answer to the M5 and E63 back in 2013. With fast responses, great handling and a functional aerodynamic body kit, it was still a big saloon but it was the ultimate antithesis of what a Jaguar used to be when we were little. It would take you on to a limited top speed of 186mph, and it was brilliant.

Want noise? Drama? Theatre? Space for the family? A big smile every time you drive anywhere? This was your car. Okay, so it was about as fuel-efficient as an oil rig fire, but if you could afford to buy it you could afford to run it.

You paid just short of £80,000 for this when it was new, plus options. That made it about £15,000 pricier than the 39bhp poorer XFR and about £6000 heavier than an M5. No wonder it didn’t exactly sell like hot cakes – just six are for sale on British Auto Trader at the time of writing, and two of those are the gorgeous Sportbrake estate.

Not this one, though. Our pick is the cheapest on that site, and you should brace for the impact of a (relative) steal. This one-owner car is only five years old with just 50,000 miles beneath its diamond-cut wheels, but depreciation has hoofed it right in its supercharged spuds. It’s listed at £33,995, representing a headline loss of over £9000 per year. Bear in mind that the original purchase price would have been boosted by options and the trade-in price would have been thousands lower than that; the actual depreciation could easily be as much as £12,000 per year.

Bargain status assured, then, in 2018. This Polaris Gloss White model with the upgraded extended black leather interior and red stitching is an opulent car, and one that won’t stand out too much. The standard large rear wing, which provided a 68 per cent reduction in high-speed lift, has been swapped for the subtler boot lip spoiler; a no-cost option.

The front seats and steering wheel are heated, there’s sat-nav, Bluetooth, the awesome Meridian stereo system, dual-zone climate control and a reversing camera, to name a few of its luxuries. You get all that alongside the ability to flex your right ankle at any time and bring down all the gods’ fury in the form of fire-breathing speed and a ridiculous bombardment from the exhausts.

All this for less than the price of a brand new entry-level XF with a 161bhp diesel engine and an automatic gearbox? Come on, that’s got to be the deal of a lifetime…
