The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Is Back In Japan, But For One Year Only

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70’s rugged simplicity and dependable reliability have made it an iconic SUV. It’s a hugely useful tool in remote places where a breakdown could be disastrous, so while it’s had a series of successors, the 70 itself has remained in production, available in Australia and certain Asian markets. 70 sales in Japan ran from 1994-2004, but it’s now making a return to its homeland.

Nostalgic demand for the 70 is high in Japan, so Toyota has unveiled this 30th Anniversary model, which it’ll sell in the country for one year only. The special 30th Anniversary model is priced at 3.6 million yen (£20,900), at which price Toyota is expecting to shift around 200 a month.

It’s a little more modern inside than the original 70, with the addition of safety features such as airbags and anti-lock brakes, but it’s still the same tough-as-old boots ladder chassis vehicle underneath.

30th Anniversary models come with a 4.0-litre V6 which develops 228bhp and 265 lb-ft. This is sent to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.
