Rejoice: No Double Points Or Standing Restarts For F1 In 2015

The double points rule and standing restarts after safety car periods will be scrapped for the 2015 Formula 1 season. According to Autosport, teams agreed to abandon both rules at a meeting of the Strategy Group and F1 Commission in Geneva this week.

Following a push from F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, 2014 saw the introduction of double points in a bid to keep the title fight alive to the final race of the season. It was hugely unpopular - from both fans and members of the F1 circus - and ultimately did not play a part in deciding the championship in Abu Dhabi.

The introduction of standing restarts after safety car periods for 2015 was originally voted in by the F1 Commission earlier this year. However, following safety concerns, it will also be abandoned.

Meanwhile it was also agreed that the sport’s F1 radio ban will remain, meaning only direct help to the drivers will be allowed. The changes to the 2015 regulations still have to be officially approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which meets next week.
