Maserati has confirmed details of its upcoming range of hybrid and electric cars, and according to reports they’re set to be powered by Ferrari-developed powertrains.

The new cars will be wholly made in Italy, the brand says, and designed with a joint focus on luxury and performance. Ultra-fast charging, extended range versus current norms and special driving modes will all feature as core selling points of the ‘Maserati Blue’ fully-electric cars.

The first car to appear as part of the all-new wave will be a sports car based on the Alfieri concept, but a facelifted and electrified Ghibli will arrive first among the hybrid Maseratis in 2020. It will be built at Maserati’s Modena factory and will, according to Auto Express, use a powertrain engineered and supplied by Ferrari.

It has previously been reported that Ferrari would stop making engines for Maserati by 2022. Either Auto Express is wrong on this, Ferrari has changed its mind (or had it changed) or they were all just misdirecting us to deflect questions for a while. Whatever the truth, we have no technical data on the future power units yet.

Autonomous capabilities are also high on Maserati’s new list. It will start with level two advanced assist systems for use on motorways, then advance quickly to level three systems that can take control and bring the car safely to a stop at the side of the road in, say, a medical emergency.

Other notes in Maserati’s grand plans include a new paint shop at the Modena factory that will allow buyers to watch their car being painted. It goes hand-in-hand with an up-scaled customisation programme that aims to offer truly bespoke aesthetic tweaks according to whatever a wealthy client wishes.
