The Corvette ZR1 Is Back At The 'Ring With Its Crazy Silencers, Lap Time Glory Incoming

Chevrolet's monstrous new 'Vette has returned to the Nordschleife, targetting a sub-seven minute lap

Remember those funky exhaust silencers we saw on a Corvette ZR1 prototype last year? They’re back! This time, the giant end cans - present due to Nurburgring noise limits - are fitted to what looks to be a production ZR1. And the reason is almost certainly for incoming Nordschleife bragging rights from Chevrolet.

So, what kind of time will it clock? Well, the previous-generation ZR1 managed a 7min 19.63sec lap via an official effort from General Motors, while Sport Auto last year clocked 7:13.90 in a C7 Z06.

The 6.2-litre supercharged V8-powered C7 ZR1 however, should be significantly faster than both. Chevrolet itself has suggested that a sub-seven minute lap from the 745bhp monster should be possible, and we believe them.

The car used for the effort appears to have the ZTK Performance Package fitted, which includes an aero kit that ups the downforce to 431kg, specific damper tuning and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

We can’t wait to see the time it manages. And the onboard footage!

In the meantime Porsche will be planning something better and looking smug as hell.
