Confirmed: The Next Mercedes-AMG C63 Will Be A Hybrid
The next Mercedes-AMG C63 will definitely be a downsized hybrid, the boss of AMG has confirmed.
The German muscle-merchant is attempting to perfect an ‘always-on’ hybrid technology that makes the electric motor’s massive extra thrust available all the time, on demand. It’s likely to feature alongside a twin-turbo V6, which will be easier to package in the C than the latest straight-six.
We imagine the idea like a normal ‘full hybrid’ setup but with a much bigger motor and a whole heap more energy density flowing into and out of a more advanced battery. High-spec energy recovery systems derived from F1 could be possible.
In an interview with CarAdvice, AMG overlord Tobias Moers said that the next C63 will change significantly. He said:
“If you apply proper intelligent hybridisation or electrification to a car which is capable of having an always-on strategy regarding the battery and the whole system, then it’s amazing what you can get out of them.
“Which means for sure the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will be a hybrid – that’s now a given.”
What we don’t know is whether the new drivetrain is scheduled for the facelifted version of the car that was only just announced, so in three to four years, or whether its arrival will wait until the next all-new version is due, in 2025 or so. We suspect the latter.
In a way it’s a new generation of exciting technology, but in another way it’s a sad decline from the glory days of the 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8. If the new tech excites us as much as the old did, it’ll be a miracle.

Nooo! Another case of goodbye-unique-selling-point. But I guess if it means less weight over the front it’s OK - after all all its competitors are V6s or I6s. They’d better keep the V8s in the E63 and AMG GT though.
I doubt there will be any loss in weight…hybrid systems will definitely add more lol!
I don’t like that manufacturers almost use the performance versions of their cars as a starting point for hybridisation/electrification (I guess because they can charge more money for them)
They should be the FINAL versions of a given model to be electrified
Like, do not hybridise the C63 before every other C-class, from C180 to C300 is hybrid, or better, electric
It feels like we will end up with electric AMG cars and a bunch of diesel C220d which is just wrong
But it makes sense.
Pretty understandable.
Just saying… Just cuz they’re using a hybrid doesn’t mean they’ll get rid of a V8….

Instead of being mad about this we should be happy that it’s a hybrid, rather than fully electric.
Just imagine an AMG without a glorious exhaust sound, even if it’s “just” a six cylinder.
We could think about the other way around.
Low level entry sportscars are possibly going to be fully electric, while the most powerfull will have a combustion engine, for more power, sound and all the good feeling that comes with it.
Sounds silly for now, but maybe possible for the near future.
