Confirmed: The Next Mercedes-AMG C63 Will Be A Hybrid

The next Mercedes-AMG C63 will definitely be a downsized hybrid, the boss of AMG has confirmed.

The German muscle-merchant is attempting to perfect an ‘always-on’ hybrid technology that makes the electric motor’s massive extra thrust available all the time, on demand. It’s likely to feature alongside a twin-turbo V6, which will be easier to package in the C than the latest straight-six.

Confirmed: The Next Mercedes-AMG C63 Will Be A Hybrid

We imagine the idea like a normal ‘full hybrid’ setup but with a much bigger motor and a whole heap more energy density flowing into and out of a more advanced battery. High-spec energy recovery systems derived from F1 could be possible.

In an interview with CarAdvice, AMG overlord Tobias Moers said that the next C63 will change significantly. He said:

“If you apply proper intelligent hybridisation or electrification to a car which is capable of having an always-on strategy regarding the battery and the whole system, then it’s amazing what you can get out of them.

“Which means for sure the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will be a hybrid – that’s now a given.”

We'll have this one, thanks...
We'll have this one, thanks...

What we don’t know is whether the new drivetrain is scheduled for the facelifted version of the car that was only just announced, so in three to four years, or whether its arrival will wait until the next all-new version is due, in 2025 or so. We suspect the latter.

In a way it’s a new generation of exciting technology, but in another way it’s a sad decline from the glory days of the 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8. If the new tech excites us as much as the old did, it’ll be a miracle.

I thought AMG was a purveyor of noisy V8s, but thanks to Daimler, it’s under their orders, and now has to follow their rules. If AMG was independent nowadays, this wouldn’t have happened.

I’ve always liked Mercedes cars. Despite the fact that they made many great cars after the mid-90’s, lots of people like to say things like “the last REAL Mercedes was the W124/W140/W202.” I now feel like there is going to be a new generation of Mercedes enthusiasts who say things like “the last REAL Mercedes was the W222/W205/ pre-facelift W213.

Why would we want a V6 hybrid C63? It’ll just feel like a faster C43, fast but undramatic.

Cars of 2018? Good NAs are almost dead and now the ICE itself is gonna die without help. It’s gonna be terrible.

This makes me mad…….. Really!?!? Out of all cars, why do the sports cars have to be hybrid?
And Hybrids are the ones poluting the most out of all cars.

Right now electric cars are poluting more than regular ones because of coal energy.

Honestly, I’d prefer they retire the C63 branding. As a 6 pot hybrid is simply wrong for a car who’s key defining characteristic was a grunting V8 (a trait it actually kept after the 4.0 turbo downsize). I’m not saying the new car will be worse, but it is not a car in the same sense as the C63 and really deserves a new branding.
