Pirelli has developed a brand new retro-style tyre designed for a car of which there were only ever 39 made.

The new Stelvio Corsa has been developed for the ultra-exclusive Ferrari 250 GTO. The record says that there were 33 250 GTO Series I chassis built, three Series II models and three upgraded 330 GTOs with a larger engine. Just 38 are left in existence after Ferrari apparently scrapped its first 330 GTO in order to build the second.

The tyre revives a name Pirelli last used in the 1960s, and that scored big successes underneath the cars of Alberto Ascari and the pairing of Maurice Trintignant and Froilan Gonzales. Manufactured to look like a 1950s period-correct tyre using the original Stelvio Corsa’s archived designs, the new one uses a modern construction for stability and cutting-edge compound tech for grip. Given that the GTO is the most expensive car you can buy, you want it to run good rubber (if you dare run it - like these guys).

Pirelli says no other car will be fitted with the Stelvio Corsa. The sizes measure 215/70 R15 98W at the front and 225/70 R15 100W at the back, but given the likely astronomical cost of a full set, Pirelli is taking steps to make sure it maintains the exclusivity for GTO owners.

We reached out to Pirelli over a day ago for some word on the price, but have heard nothing back so far. We’ll update this piece if we hear anything.
