The 8.8-Sec 1/4-Mile Tesla Roadster Will Get Even Faster

Being able to crush any other production car on the drag strip isn't enough, apparently, as Elon Musk hints at a faster incarnation of the new Roadster, which already hits 100mph in 4.2 seconds...

Well, this is something to think about. The Tesla Roadster that was unveiled out of nowhere at the semi truck launch last week, the one that can hit 60mph in 1.9 seconds, is the base performance model. There’s potentially a faster one coming.

Why on earth you’d need something faster than a car that can already comfortably blow away the likes of the McLaren 720S and Bugatti Chiron on the drag strip, we haven’t quite worked out, yet. Because you can, maybe?

Anyway, that’s beside the point. An 8.8-second quarter-mile will have Dodge Demon owners crying over their harnesses, but still Elon Musk wants more… albeit acknowledging that a road-legal car that fast might genuinely offend the authorities.
Autocar has quoted him as saying:

“The point of doing this is to give a hardcore smackdown to gasoline cars. Driving a gasoline sports car is going to feel like driving a steam engine with a side of quiche [compared to this].

“This will be the first time that any production car has broken nine seconds in the quarter-mile. [An upgrade is] just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities.”

Yep, he did just say rocket tech. We can only assume he doesn’t mean that. We can’t imagine the law would appreciate actual rockets being installed in cars…

Bugatti: Stop, Tesla, please. I don’t have any records left to spare.

Makes electric cars with zero exhaust gases to save the environment.
Proposes rocket cars which rely entirely on exhaust gases for propulsion.

I’m fairly sure that by rocket tech he means, in association with common expression “rocket science”, technological equipment (like electronics) such as can be found in rockets. He doesn’t want to actually have rocket-type propulsion…

You know, at least for myself, the primary reason I wouldn’t own a full EV yet is due to the lack of sound. It doesn’t even have to be a good sound really….it can be fake or enhanced motor whine for all I care…but I’ve been in a buddies tesla and that was my only gripe to speak of :/

I would be skeptial. Tesla made the biggest loss in their companys history recently. The timing of the teaser for the Roadster seems just to convenient to me. Especially if you think about Teslas unusual business practice of taking huge deposits on a product that has yet to be build…
