The Mercedes-AMG S63's 0-130mph Time Is Proof That Four Litres Is Enough

It may not have any more power than the E63 S, but the S63 can still crack out a seriously quick 0-100mph time

While the 2018 Mercedes-AMG S63 doesn’t actually have any more power than the E63 S, with which it now shares a 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine, don’t let that make you think that the larger and heavier car is slow. This video apparently shows the latest hot S-Class in a sprint from 0-137mph, and it’s pretty brisk.

Starting from nothing with no launch control in action, the 604bhp car fires away with no drama and shifts out of first gear at about 40mph before really getting into its stride, mashing second and third gears in no time and ultimately grabbing fourth, passing 100mph like it’s nothing. The driver lifts off in the low 130s, but the sheer momentum of the acceleration takes it up to 137mph before it begins to slow.

Although it’s hard to be exact when the digital speedometer makes such big, slow jumps, we reckon the 0-100mph time is somewhere in the region of nine seconds. That’s quick enough for most people, right? We should mention, too, that we’re not sure whether this is the four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive car.

Note the S63’s power and torque usage gauges, the boost gauge and the tyre temperature readouts, all given space on the widescreen digital instrument cluster. This is one fast car that wants to tell you all about how large its numbers are while it’s stomping towards the horizon, but with this sort of pace it’s better if you keep your eyes on the road…

No replacement for displacement

Technically, with all that boost pressure, it’s burning a helluva lot more fuel than an equivalent N/A V8, so arguably it’s not truly a 4.0L engine

Too much is never enough.

“The driver lifts off in the low 130s, but the sheer momentum of the acceleration takes it up to 137mph before it begins to slow.” No, that’s not how physics works

I would still take the W221 S63 AMG 6.2L for its M156 engine.
