Here's A Very Close Up Look At The New McLaren 720S

Is it just us, or does it seem as though McLaren is determined to go about the reveal of its 650S successor in the most teasing way possible? A couple of weeks ago McLaren unveiled the car’s carbonfibre tub and nothing else, and now we have this zoomed in image of a wing.

It all seems a bit needless when a mere Google image search will revealed photos of an undisguised test mule, but we won’t complain, because this latest tease does give a close up look at some lovely engineering porn. Plus, McLaren has revealed some juicy details about the new supercar’s aero package, some of which are fascinating.

The 650S replacement - codenamed P14 and rumoured to be called ‘720S’ in production trim - is said to have “double the aerodynamic efficiency” of the old car. It’s partly down to the new active wing, which is the full width of the P14’s rear, and can be deployed as an air brake in less than half a second.

Cooling has been improved by 15 per cent too, with a duct integrated within each of the car’s dihedral doors forcing air into high temperature radiators. A second duct in each door draws air out of the front wheel arch meanwhile, increasing downforce. Clever, no?

The car will be revealed in full on 7 March at the Geneva Motor Show.
