Porsche Has Just Teased The New, Probably Mid-Engine 911 RSR

The Porsche 911 has remained stubbornly rear-engined ever since its inception, but that could be about to change. Well, it could be about to for one particular version: the RSR race car.

Porsche is rumoured to have done the unthinkable with the latest RSR - teased in the sketch above - shifting the engine in front of the rear wheels for the first time in any 911, road or track. From what you can see going on in the testing footage below, it certainly looks like some substantial mid-engine related changes have been going on.

Furthermore, Porsche has called the incoming RSR replacement “the most spectacular” version of the sports car ever seen. Quite a claim.

We’ll find out for sure where the RSR’s engine sits when the car is revealed at the LA Auto Show on Thursday.

Anyone else getting ahead of themselves and wondering if a production version might follow…?

But how? The new layout will have to be homologated. So either Porsche will have to make a road going version, or they have been given some sort of special dispensation.

In any case it kinda defeats the purpose of a production based GT-category. Its 1998 all over again…
