You become an unofficial taxi driver

This is especially true if you’re the first in your group of friends to pass their test, but even if you’re not, your newfound freedom means that you want to drive everyone everywhere.

Finding any excuse to drive

7 Things Everyone Who's Just Passed Their Driving Test Can Relate To

When you first pass your test, the novelty of being behind the wheel means you’ll find any excuse to drive. You might be a bit low on milk, or perhaps you need to do some recycling and fancy driving to the bottle bank on the other side of town. Whatever needs doing, you’ll find a way to do it by car.

Always offering to be designated driver

While your mates are all spending their part-time wages and student loans on cheap booze, you’re staying completely sober. They can’t understand why, but you know there’s one very good reason not to drink, and it’s parked outside. Plus, you have the added bonus of being able to drive home in the early hours when the roads are deserted.

Serious fear the first time you're unsupervised

You try to play it cool, but up until now you’ve always had someone to oversee your driving. What if something happens and you panic? What if you get to a junction and don’t know what to do? No matter how excited you might be to finally drive without a parent or instructor beside you, everyone experiences those first drive butterflies!

Pumping tunes for the first time

Chances are, unless you have seriously cool parents, they didn’t let you blast music while they taught you to drive. Once the fear of driving alone is gone, there’s nothing more satisfying than turning the music up and cruising about.

Learning the wonders of a handbrake turn

So you’ve learned the basics of car control in order to pass your test, but without a responsible adult to keep an eye on you, it’s time to learn the fun stuff. A handbrake turn is a great way to start teaching yourself how to handle a car that’s sliding, and it’s awesome fun.

Mocking people who use public transport

Now you’ve got a car, the world is your oyster! No more waiting to get the bus or train, you can now go where you want, when you want, and you’d like the whole world to know it!

Oh yeah, don’t forget the butt-clenching terror the first time you get sideways. And the embarrassment of spinning out in front of lots of people.

I remember doing a hand brake turn in my High School parking lot in my first car (2000 Honda Accord). It went very well for my first.

I never had the fear of driving alone, bit i did some stupid stuff not long after having the licence like finding out the top speed on my moms car :P looking back at some things i did while still a beginner i feel a bit dumb, even if i now only have 7 years experience i feel like i’m way more responsible(im a mechanic so no licence no more job, its quite a motivation)

When I got my license I just got in the car, put some 90’s gangsta rap on and rolled out of my house feeling like a boss.

Hehehe. I can relate. Though I did have a pretty cool teacher, in the form of my dad. Once I learnt how to change gear smoothly, and he had made sure I could navigate intersections correctly, he just used to get in the car, put his belt on and instantly start texting people, reading and just in general coming along for the ride. His only advice after that was he occasionally told me if the road ahead was clear enough for a rare overtake. (It takes lots of forward planning and even more momentum in my car to get passed anything) I learnt to do handbrake turns with him in the car, I went and carved up the twisties with him, hell, I even got a ticket with him in the car. His only comments were, “you f*ckwit” and “don’t tell mum.”

Don’t have a license yet but when I do practice driving…. I love overtaking other learners even they’re older or younger, I’ll drop a gear and do a flyby, and occasionally pressing the clutch and revving the sh*t out of the car, since I don’t have a license yet and all those things were done with the supervision of my father.

I’m a driver for one year and a half now and I still prefer driving over getting drunk at parties. I literally LOVE being behind the wheel.
