9 Cars That Were Riced Before They Left The Factory

Peroda Myvi SXI Sport

Here’s a car rocking a total of four fake exhaust tips, plus some dinky alloy wheels. It puts out 86bhp, so as far as we can see, it has less BHP per exhaust pipe than any other recent car. Impressive.

Alfa Romeo 156 with big wing

I like the Alfa Romeo 156, a lot. Hell, I almost bought one, and still lust after the GTA version. But one thing about the car that’s always baffled me is the optional high-level boot wing, which just looks completely out of balance with the rest of the car. It doesn’t look quite so bad on the example here as it has larger wheels and the factory side skirts, but when it’s fitted to 156s without the skirts and with the smaller pepper pot wheels, it looks downright daft.

Proton Wira Special Edition

If this article was intended to produce a ‘winner’, it would surely be this. First brought to my attention via CTzen MeiyullSlowV6 for an article we posted last year, it turns out the Wira was once available with a factory-fitted aluminium spoiler. The power from this be-winged beast? 90bhp…

BMW X5 M50d

This full fat diesel X5 isn’t here for its overall appearance. No, it has a place in this list for the badging which - on first glance - looks an awful lot like someone’s bought a bunch of BMW badges off eBay and slapped them on the boot while channeling their inner ricer.

It’d look much neater if it just said ‘X5’ like most other models in the range.

Reluctantly, I’m going to have to nominate the latest WRX STI. I say reluctantly, because the way it looks is a big part of its appeal for me: with its cavernous bonnet scoop, gold wheels (when specced) and massive rear wing, it has an aesthetic like few other cars on the road.

However, there’s no denying that the STI is essentially a very uninspiring saloon shape with a bunch of terribly unsubtle exterior mods, most notably that rear wing, which is bigger than ever on the current model.

Honda Civic Type R

Another reluctant addition is the new Civic Type R. All of those wings, flaps, bulges and vents have a purpose, but the car’s looks divide opinion like few other modern performance machines.

I rather like all the bonkers aero addendum, but then I am big child. Many think it’s over the top and even ugly, while some might actually label it as ‘rice’. Where do you stand?

Dodge Stratus R/T

Get a Dodge Stratus R/T of the right vintage, and you’re treated to a hideous boot spoiler to rival the rice factor of the Proton Wira Special Edition. Plus a few other misguided bodywork additions.

Toyota Celica GT

After a run of Celicas with fast, all-wheel drive GT-Four variants, we arrived at the seventh-generation model. This was never blessed with a performance-oriented version, however you could spec a bombastic bodykit if you wanted, called the ‘Action Package’ in some markets. This ticks off all the ricer boxes: a big and unnecessary rear wing, naff side skirts, a chunky front splitter and a lack of the necessary power to justify any of those dubious additions.

Peugeot 107 GT

Since the Peugeot 106 GTI was such a lovable little rogue, it would be nice if it was given a successor. Sadly, that’s yet to happen, although the 107 was available in ‘GT’ trim. Power was still at a rather depressing 68bhp, but you did get a pair of ricer-spec fake exhaust tips and racing stripes. Oh, and red carpet stitching. Yay.

Think you can do better? Nominate some more ‘factory-riced’ cars in the comments!

My friend’s dad had a silver W210 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI with a black leather interior & wood trim. Then he replaced it for a Mazda 6 diesel with a “race” package. It had some utterly weird bumpers straight out of Need for Speed Underground, and a massive useless rear wing. And they topped it of with that awful “grey metallic” paintjob that was actually more like someone melted mix of vanilla and strawberry icecream poured it in a bucket of filthy water and then sprayed that all over the car. Not to mention that huge “performance” exhaust pipe that was stuck to it with the real one being on the other side of the car as an impotent c*ck.

Yep. Imho, this ‘aero package’ ruined the whole car.

Knew the STI would make the list! At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, the extravagant wing and scoop do serve a performance purpose (downforce at high speeds and TMIC cooling respectively), so is it really ricey?

I don’t believe the STI is ricey at all. If the wing and vents serve a performance purpose, it’s not rice. Seems Car Throttle has forgotten that.

We had a similar model, the Corolla S with that ugly “sport” package.

My dad used to say “it could see a hill coming from 20 miles away”. No power at all.

I’m not being a smartass or something here but if you take the wing out of the Civic it’ll look like a Prius.

If you take the wing off the Civic, it’ll still look like a Civic ;) #smartassfordays

Nah, they came from Need for Speed Underground 2. Or from 2 Fast 2 Furious.
