This Is Your First Official Look At The New Nissan '400Z'

Following test-mule spy shots of the 370Z successor late last year, Nissan has released grainy images of the all-new '400Z'

The replacement for the Nissan 370Z has been on the cards for a couple of years and now, finally, there is light at the end of the empty Z-shaped tunnel thanks to this new teaser video from the manufacturer called ‘Nissan Next: From A to Z’. See what they did there?

This first look reveals the ‘400Z’s‘ (a name that’s likely but not confirmed) sleek coupe body, whose lines look as though a Toyota Supra front-end and Jaguar F-Type rear-end met in a bar and made sweet, sweet love; it’s a good look, and one befitting a sports car that may use the 400bhp VR30DDTT 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 used in the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 as well as the current Nissan Skyline.

Either way, Nissan’s clearly not keen on diluting the Z lineage. Speaking to Auto Express in 2018, Nissan’s senior vice president of design Alfonso Albaisa confirmed that Nissan would “never leave this [the Z-car] alone”, meaning that whatever the fire power may be, it’ll certainly be brawny enough to keep pace with its big-engined rivals.

In other Nissan news, the company will aim to release 12 new models (including the halo ‘400Z’) by 2021, the focus of which will be aimed at North America, Japan and China.

SUVs and EV crossovers will make much of the new lineup, which is a very good move. While they’re popular with mass market buyers, they also serve the more pressing objective of making enough money to help make enthusiast cars like the new Z possible, even as the company seeks to dramatically cut costs over the next few years.

What are your thoughts on the new look Z?

If it uses a 3.0 engine it would be a 300z not a 400z. Praying to god nissan doesn’t mess up the naming system they have used for like 40 something years

The naming system on the Nissan Z-cars were a rather confusing one, I think. It’s because They were named ‘Nissan Fairlady Z’ in Japanese market, which can be traced back to the Nissan Fairlady 1600 roadster. When they named the S30Z (the Datsun 240Z) Nissan Fairlady Z they thought that the name might not fit the car’s muscular image, Thus , for the international market (especially the US market) they named the cars after their engine displacement (ex: the Datsun 240Z, so-named because it has 2.4 litre I6 engine; the Nissan 300ZX, because it has 3 litre V6 engine; 370Z for its 3.7 litre V6 and so on and so forth), In this case the car was named after the amount of horsepower the motor has (400 HP, thus called the 400Z), which is baffling. I’ll say they should’ve stick to name the car “Fairlady Z” for the overseas or naming the cars and the line-up with differrent name from the outset, to curb the confusion among its fans and the enthusiasts.

I heard it’s got a 3.0l V6 engine, not too shabby. But I think it would be a bit better if Nissan put a Nissan-Infiniti-made V8 engine on it (can be based on VH platform or VK45DE V8s) and re-configure it for performance, power and reliability (as Nissan always has reputation for its reliability issues), as well as re-configuring the engine to have 4.0 litre of displacement so it fits the naming. Just my opinion.

Finally! An actually new Z. Lets hope nissan works their magic on this one. They have a bad tendency of making really outdated vehicles that are imo kinda meh lately. But i know when nissan actually tries, they can make some of the most fantastic cars out there

Was kinda hoping for something a bit more wedge-ey and 300ZX-ey, seeing as it’ll almost certainly be a 3.0L biturbo
