A Four-Door Mustang Is Coming And There’s A Snowball Fight In Hell

A four-door Mustang is on the way, or so car maker Ford has reportedly told its North American dealers.

The company is said to have revealed the nugget at a major dealer event earlier this month. If it’s true, the four-door car will be a lengthened ‘Mustang-inspired’ GT potentially based on the Explorer chassis, with a turbocharged V8 at the front. More was revealed, but is said to be protected by non-disclosure agreements.

Ford is targeting the Porsche Panamera and Audi A7, and evidently believes the Mustang brand is strong enough to match the badge appeal of the German giants.

Quite how a mainstream manufacturer will pull off a credible rival to cars from the expensive end of Porsche and Audi’s ranges, we’re not sure. It’s been tried many times without success.

  • Needs to be named Falcon.
  • Skeptical of V8, my money is on them going full Ecoboost V6 with the 4-door model leading the charge. One can hope the V8 is for real though
  • Not sure on the pricing/marketing strategy. Mustang is strong enough to have top-trim levels go against Porsche but main focus should be to price the 4-door alongside the standard Mustang 2-door with a reasonable price premium for adding 2 doors. Starting price low 30-s and fully loaded GT should be low/mid 50k range IMO. Special editions can then be 70k or something.

It better be called Falcon, not only would made sense historically, but the name Falcon sounds so neat that makes Panamera sound lame in comparison.

Ford announced to no longer make “cars”. Now they make the Mustang into a sedan?

I’m all for it, as long as they call it the Falcon and not the Mustang

Thoughts:

1) Remember what happened to the original Thunderbird.

2) If they can do a sedan, they can do a wagon.

3) How are they going to rival Porsche and Audi? Hmmmm… let me go look up sales figures between the Mustang coupe, Cayman, and R8.

4) When you’ve told the world you’re discontinuing all cars except the Mustang, that makes all your cars a Mustang. Even if it’s a sedan on a truck chassis.
