This Madman Will Try And Break The Bonkers On-Ice Wheelie Record

Turns out that performing a high-speed wheelie on tarmac isn’t challenging enough for some people. Wisconsin-based motorcycle racer Cecil “Bubba” Myers has taken part in various wheelie events, including the famous ‘Straightliners world wheelie competition’ held at Elvington airfield in North Yorkshire. But for 2016, Bubba is upping the ante, embarking on a mission to beat the on-ice world wheelie record. Yes, that really is a thing. The current record stands at 128mph, a whole 81mph slower than the 209mph tarmac record set by madman Gary Rothwell. But that doesn’t mean that the attempt is going to be easy.

In an interview with local website, The Laker & The Pioneer, Myers explains the unique challenges of the surface:

“It has bumps and ridges, divots and everything else. Just one little small imperfection could really put you in a whirlwind of hurt.”

A rough surface sounds frankly terrifying when you’re on the back wheel at over 128mph, a speed that Myers has already broken in testing. Somewhat surprisingly, current record holder Ryan Suchanek has been helping Myers prepare for the run. Not a very common occurrence in the highly competitive world of Guinness Book records.

To ensure that Bubba does break the record, he’ll be using a 200bhp, 998cc supercharged, Kawasaki H2; getting the front wheel off the ground shouldn’t be much of a problem. But getting it up for a brief moment won’t be enough to clinch the record. To satisfy the guys at Guinness, he’ll need to keep the wheel in the air for a whole 100 meters.

The record attempt will take place this weekend, 7 February, at Lake Koshkonong, near Fort Atkinson in Wisconsin. We wish him the best of luck.
