This Is The All-New Volvo S90 And It's Got Autopilot Mode

The wraps have just come off the all-new, and ridiculously smart Volvo S90. It'll be fitted with a semi-autonomous function and a stupidly fast Polestar version is on the cards!

This is our first look at the all-new Volvo S90, the Swedish car maker’s answer to the likes of the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class.

The juicy details we know now before the car’s official debut at the Detroit motor show in January are that a Polestar version of the S90 is planned (perhaps in V90 wagon form to take down the might of the Audi RS6), and that the car will come fitted with a semi-autonomous mode that works at speeds up to 80mph (by contrast, Tesla’s Autopilot mode works at up to 90mph). The semi-autonomous mode fitted to the Volvo follows the car in front and is guided by road markings, so isn’t as sophisticated as the system used in the Tesla, however.

While the front of the car clearly mirrors Volvo’s current design language (you can tell that it’s the brother of the brilliant XC90 SUV), the rear of the S90 is far more daring in its design (not that we’re complaining).

Volvo says that the new S90 will ‘combine Scandinavian design with cutting-edge safety and cloud-based applications and services’ which translates to a decluttered interior, a nine-inch touchscreen and lot of expensive-looking materials.

Powering the new S90 will be a similar line-up to the one you’ll find in the aforementioned XC90, so expect a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged and supercharged T6 engine, and a T8 plug-in hybrid version with around 400bhp. A diesel D5 will also make the cut, as will the Polestar-tuned car, although nothing’s been confirmed just yet.

What do you think of the new Volvo S90?
