This 49-Mile 1987 Buick Grand National Just Sold For $75,000

Would you pay $75,000 for a 31-year-old Buick Grand National? Someone just has – and with fair reason. This could be the ‘newest’ 1987 example in public ownership, with just 49 miles covered from new and all the original stickers, trim covers and paperwork still in place.

This one, which according to the seller would have been one of the last ever made, is so ‘new’ that it hasn’t even been through dealer delivery preparation and technically isn’t street legal. It was collected direct from the factory on a transporter by the first owner. The mileage was accrued during two separate drives on private land – into and out of storage on a former US Air Force base in Colorado.

It’s also equipped with just about every option on the spec sheet at the time, from the factory-fit t-bar ‘Hatch Roof’ instead of the much-maligned dealer-sourced retro-fit option, analogue gauges instead of the unreliable digital ones and a six-way electric driver’s seat.

Originally sold for just under $19,000 by a dealer in West Virginia, it spent a 12-year stint in Colorado before changing hands as part of a larger collection sale deal, then was quickly re-sold to the third owner, the late brother of the seller, for a new life in Texas.

According to the listing, the car was started and serviced regularly to maintain the fluids and seals, at least until the owner sadly became too ill to do it any more. Everything solid is original, including the tyres, exhaust and bumper fillers.

Under the bonnet (we’ll allow ‘hood’ in this case) is a 3.8-litre intercooled and turbocharged V6 with fuel injection, linked to a four-speed automatic transmission. Its interior is literally immaculate – meaning most of it simply hasn’t been touched by human hands since leaving the factory. The steering wheel, seats and floors are covered with Buick’s pre-delivery plastic sheets.

This is a super-cool car, and one that we’d have a lot of difficulty resisting the temptation to drive. With the auction having finished over the weekend you can bet it’s already on its way to a new collection.
