The BMW M4 is already an aggressive little so and so, even in the already angry world of powerful rear-drive coupes. However, just in case anyone wanted an even more butch version, BMW has something up its sleeve: the M4 GTS. It’s just a concept at this stage, on display at this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, but make no mistake, this is previewing a full production version.

No doubt you’ll have already clocked this M4’s most obvious changes: the chunky front splitter and hefty rear wing. Both are adjustable and made from carbonfibre, but if we can distract you from the protruding bits and the love-them-or-hate-them orange wheels for a moment, we’d like to draw your attention to the under-bonnet changes.

The GTS is rocking the same sort of water injection system seen on the M4 MotoGP safety car. This shoots a fine spray of water into the intake manifold, which evaporates and cools down the air going into the engine. The result? Quite a bit more power. In fact, in the MotoGP safety car, it adds 8 per cent, bringing the total to 459bhp. Not bad.

Like the sound of such a thing? The production version - a successor to the old E92 M3 GTS - is expected to be here next year.
