When given the option, most sports car buyers tend to go for automatic gearboxes rather than getting a manual. Indeed, at the launch of the BMW M4 earlier this year, for example, the German company told us that a whopping 90 per cent of buyers were expected to shirk the stick and go for the DCT auto. That’s what makes Jag’s decision to add a third pedal to the F-Type to satisfy hardcore enthusiasts - a decision it confirmed today when announcing 2016 MY F-Type update - a very big deal indeed.

While many companies are ditching a manual option altogether in their sports cars due to the lack of interest among buyers, Jaguar is actually bringing stick shift back; there hasn’t been a manual Jag sports car since the old E-Type.

And they’re putting a lot of thought into it, too. The engineers have made sure it’s a nice short throw, and the centre console has been reshaped to give more room to move your left foot and arm about.

The manual ‘box will be available on the V6 and V6 S in rear-wheel drive only - if you want one of the new four-wheel drive F-Types, it’ll be an auto. The manual cars will be £1800 cheaper than their auto equivalents when they go on sale next year.
